My Oxford Year
The dream of the American Anna is coming true because she’s going to Oxford to study. On her first day, she meets Jamie… but not in the best way. The next day, Anna finds out that he’s actually going to be her teacher. Jamie tries to make it up to her, and they start spending more time together.
Jamie isn’t the relationship type, and Anna is eventually going back to the U.S., so they decide to just have fun. They are not in an official relationship. But when Anna finds out Jamie has been lying about where he’s been, she wants answers. And when she finally learns the truth, her heart breaks.
Review
I always love a good romance movie. I don’t even care if it’s a rom-com or something a little more heartbreaking—like this one. Yes, I had read a lot of posts about this movie, and many people thought it was going to be a cute rom-com. I’m here to warn you: that is not the case at all. There’s a good chance you’ll cry at some point during this movie.
The setting and storyline were great. I mean, the story was sad but still good, if you know what I mean. And Oxford is just beautiful. I loved the rainy moments; they gave the movie cozy vibes, which I absolutely love. I’ve never been to Oxford, but it’s definitely on my list now.
The characters were likable enough. I’ve seen a lot of posts from people who didn’t like Sofia Carson in this role and thought her acting felt stiff. Honestly, she didn’t bother me while I was watching. Is she my favorite actress? No. But she was okay. Corey Mylchreest, on the other hand, was great and this movie definitely reminded me why I have a soft spot for English men. I’m not exactly sure what it is, but somehow they just seem more attractive.
That said, I was missing the chemistry between the two main characters. There was a teeny tiny bit, but that was it. I needed more. I wanted sparks flying off the screen.
Which brings me to something else: this movie reminded me of Me Before You. In that film, you could really feel the chemistry. The main characters were amazing together. So right now, I kind of feel like My Oxford Year was a weaker version of Me Before You. I cried so hard watching Me Before You. I still cried a little during My Oxford Year (stupid hormones), but not nearly as much.
Overall, I think it was an okay movie. Maybe I’d watch it again someday, but it’s not going to be one of my favorites. Still, if you liked Me Before You, there’s a good chance you might like this one too.
