The Last Letter
Ella is a single mother of twins. Her brother died in the army, and her daughter, Maisie, is battling cancer. She also believes that Chaos, the man she wrote letters to, has died. One day, Beckett shows up and tells Ella that her brother, Ryan, wanted him to help her. What Ella doesn’t know is that Beckett’s call sign is Chaos. He decides to keep this a secret until Maisie gets better, believing that if Ella knew the truth, she wouldn’t want him there.
Review
I’m in a book club, and I asked for a book recommendation. At that moment, I was in the mood for something sad, something that would break my heart and make me cry. One of the members told me The Last Letter was a sad book, so I decided to give it a try. I already knew Rebecca Yarros from the Fourth Wing series.
The story takes place in Telluride, where there’s a cozy B&B surrounded by nature. It reminded me of a vacation I once took in the middle of nowhere, where I was surrounded by trees and barely any people. I loved it. I could run around, play, and just have fun with my brother.
The characters were likable, although I’m still not sure why Beckett didn’t want to tell Ella who he really was. I mean, he explained his reasons, but I think Ella would have understood why he stopped writing back, his best friend died. Still, Ella was lucky to find a man who would always show up for her. He loved her children, Colt and Maisie, and they loved him, along with his dog, Havoc.
As I mentioned, I wanted to read a sad book, and it definitely was. Ryan’s death and Maisie’s battle with cancer made the story feel heavy. But it didn’t make me cry, at least not at first. When I had about 10–15% of the book left, I honestly thought it wouldn’t make me cry. And then the last few pages happened, and they completely destroyed me. It was awful. I was sobbing and had to stop several times because it was just too much. The ending of this book broke me.
This book was incredible. If a story can make you cry like that, you know it’s a good one. Yes, it was intense, but it was so, so good. It broke my heart, and I’m sure I’ll remember it for a very long time. It truly made an impact on me. If you’re ever in the mood for a good cry, read this one. This book, especially the ending, will most likely break your heart. It’s a beautifully tragic story.
