The Woman in Cabin 10
Lo is a successful journalist who has been invited to join a group of rich people on a luxury cruise. She’s there because Anne, one of the guests, is dying of cancer and plans to donate all of her money to charity and research. But one night, Lo wakes up to the sound of a woman screaming. She hears strange noises coming from the cabin next to hers, and when she steps outside, she sees someone going overboard. She immediately alerts everyone, but they all insist that no one is staying in cabin 10 and that nobody is missing. Still, Lo is a journalist, and she’s determined to find out what really happened, even when it becomes dangerous.
Review
Most of the time, I watch happy, cute movies, but I don’t mind watching a mystery or thriller every now and then. I always enjoy the suspense, and of course, it’s fun to guess what really happened and who killed who. And when I saw that Keira Knightley was part of the cast, I obviously had to watch it because I’m a big fan of hers.
The majority of the movie takes place on a beautiful cruise ship. Seriously, I want to be that rich and spend a whole weekend (or week!) with friends on that kind of boat. It was huge. But of course, every guest was super rich, so it made sense. The story is about how Lo sees someone go overboard and believes that person is dead. But when she alerts everyone, they tell her that the cabin next to hers was empty, meaning she must have imagined the whole situation. Lo can’t let it go, though, especially when she later sees another woman in a black hoodie in that cabin.
I wish I could say the characters were likable, but they were all snobby and rich, basically treating Lo like she was crazy. Toward the end, I did start to like Ben, Lo’s ex-boyfriend, who was also a guest, but other than that, most of the characters were unlikable, which made them all potential suspects.
The movie was fine overall, but I have to admit I got a little bored in the beginning. Maybe that was just my short attention span, but it felt a bit slow at first. It was also pretty obvious that something was going on with Anne. One day she mentioned she had stopped taking her medication, and the next she said she hated taking it so I immediately felt like she was pretending to be sick. By the end, it all made sense. I also kind of guessed who the killer was, since it was pretty obvious to me.
Overall, it was an okay thriller movie. The beginning was a little slow and I figured out the killer early on, but I liked the parts where Lo was trying to piece everything together. These days, movies are often over two hours long, so I appreciated that this one was “just” an hour and a half. It didn’t drag on, and sometimes it’s better to keep a movie shorter and to the point.
