Don’t Brake My Heart

First, I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book!

The main reason I requested this book is that I’m from the Netherlands, and it’s centered around cycling. If there’s one thing you should know about the Dutch, it’s that we love our bikes. We use them for transportation every day. I cycle to work daily, so a sports romance about cycling immediately caught my attention.

I ended up giving this book 3 out of 5 stars for several reasons, but I’d like to start with the positives.

I really enjoyed the cycling theme. There are so many sports romances these days, but most of them focus on hockey, baseball, football, or Formula 1. I don’t think I’ve ever read, or even seen, a sports romance centered around professional cycling. This book revolves around the Tour de France, one of the biggest sporting events in the world. It’s hard to avoid during the summer, and I’ve watched it several times myself whenever I had the chance.

That said, I don’t think this was ultimately the right book for me. The biggest issue was that I never felt fully invested in the story. In fact, it felt like the most interesting part didn’t begin until around the 70% mark, when the Tour de France actually started. Until then, I found myself struggling to stay engaged.

The second reason was Colin. Unfortunately, I really didn’t like him as a character. Although he’s 25 years old, he often behaved like a 13-year-old boy. His constant pranks on Leesa felt incredibly childish and immature. I understand that his actions were supposed to show that he had a crush on her, but he was an adult during most of these interactions. There are far more mature ways to get someone’s attention, and instead of finding his behavior charming, I found it frustrating.

Overall, this book wasn’t for me, and I’m unfortunately not its biggest fan. However, if you’re a fan of sports romances and are looking for something different from the usual hockey or Formula 1 romances, this book definitely stands out. But the fact this book is about cycling/ Tour de France makes it stand out.

Review

I have read a couple of books by Katherine Center by now, and honestly, I don’t think there’s a single book of hers that I didn’t like. Even better, I think I’ve given all of her books 5/5 stars on Goodreads. And as you can probably tell, this was another five-star (or heart) read.

There wasn’t a single thing I disliked about this book, so I’m just going to talk about everything I loved instead. First of all, the story is great. JoJo and Cooper were best friends, and then he suddenly disappeared and ghosted her. Yes, it was a really terrible thing to do without explanation, but you eventually find out why he did it. You just keep reading to uncover the truth. And okay, it’s a romance novel, you can probably predict his reason, but it still works.

This book isn’t just about romance. There’s also a bit of action. And I’m not talking about anything between the sheets because this book has zero spice. I mean that something actually happens to JoJo, and I couldn’t stop reading.

The characters were amazing. JoJo is trying to become someone else so that her old crush will like her. And honestly, isn’t that something most of us have tried at some point? Pretending to be someone we’re not? I loved Cooper the most. He cares about JoJo so much that he puts his own feelings aside to help her and even becomes her wingman.

The tension between them was incredible. I loved it; the yearning, the build-up, and the love they have for each other were just perfection. This is exactly the kind of romance I love to read. This book made me feel everything, from the happy moments to the more painful ones when they were fighting. It made me feel alive.

It was another amazing book by Katherine Center. Yes, it was very predictable, and normally, I don’t always love that, but this time, I didn’t mind at all. I was secretly hoping all my predictions would come true, and when they did, I was just so happy and giggling.

It is almost summer and one of my goals is to stop doomscrolling and read more books instead. I love reading for several reasons. First of all, I love that these books can bring me to another world for a couple of hours. Plus, I think it is also sort of form of meditation for me. I feel so relaxed when I am reading.

Laney Young witnessed something terrible, and to protect her, Officer Bea is hiding her from the world. Bea basically drops Laney off with the Foxx family in Fiasco. She trusts them and believes Laney will be safe there, as long as Laney keeps her mouth shut.

Laney immediately loves life on the Foxx property. The Foxx family makes bourbon, and she helps them organize events and manage day-to-day activities. All of the Foxx brothers are handsome, but Grant is definitely the one she’s most interested in.

As they grow closer, Laney is forced to keep many things secret. Grant gets the feeling that she’s hiding something, so he starts digging for answers. Unknowingly, he ends up putting Laney in danger.

Review

This is the first book in the Bourbon Boys series by Victoria Wilder. This first installment focuses on Grant, but all three brothers get their own love story and book.

This book falls into the romantic suspense genre, and honestly, I’m obsessed with books in this category. It combines two of my favorite genres: romance and suspense. You get crime and mystery mixed with a love story, which is always a winning combination for me.

The story starts off in a very interesting way. Laney is basically dropped off with the Foxx family. The Foxxes have no idea who she is or why she’s there, but they trust Officer Bea enough not to ask too many questions. Throughout the book, you get snippets of Laney’s life in New York, what she witnessed, and the reason she ended up in Fiasco in the first place.

The characters were all fine. Laney is trying to stay safe and avoid danger. She does her best to be careful while also enjoying her new life with the Foxx family. She fits right in with the rest of them. Grant, on the other hand, hasn’t been with anyone since losing his ex. He believes the Foxx family is cursed and that if they fall in love, their partner will die. So even though he’s attracted to Laney, he tries to keep his distance. While I liked both main characters, I didn’t love them. They were enjoyable enough, but nothing about them really stood out to me.

The plot itself was pretty interesting. As I mentioned, it’s a mix of romance and suspense, although I would say it’s about 75% romance and 25% suspense. Some chapters were genuinely engaging and fun to read, while others were just okay. The slower chapters mostly focused on the two main characters falling in love. It was cute, I guess, but not particularly memorable or mind-blowing. It was simply fine.

In case you’re wondering, this book doesn’t have a third-act breakup. It feels like almost every romance novel includes one of these days, so it was actually quite refreshing to read a story that avoided that trope.

The writing style was solid as well. Overall, I liked this book. The main reason I gave it 3/5 hearts (though it’s probably closer to 3.5/5) is that the story was just okay for me. Nothing made me giggle, blush, or become completely invested in the romance. It wasn’t bad by any means, but it wasn’t a favorite either.

That said, I’m still considering reading the other books in the series. I’m curious to see what kind of love stories the other Foxx brothers get.

Jackie is the CEO of Air Cruz, and she runs a tight ship. One day, her best lawyer gets into an accident involving a burrito, and Daniel Blanchflower has just started working for Air Cruz. He immediately has to step up. As a lawyer, Daniel has to work closely with Jackie, and he doesn’t mind that at all. From the moment he first saw her, he fell in love. As they spend more time together, they grow closer and closer, but they try to keep their distance. Dating a coworker is against company policy, and this isn’t exactly the right time to start a relationship anyway because of the lawsuit against Jackie and Air Cruz.

Review

I was sort of excited when I saw a new rom-com coming to Netflix. I mean, the movie starred Jennifer Lopez, and in the early 2000s, I was obsessed with her rom-coms. I loved watching them. At the same time, though, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this one. I watched the trailer and got some weird vibes from it. I wasn’t convinced it was going to be a great movie.

After watching it, I’m still not sure how I feel about it. There were some parts I genuinely liked, but there were also quite a few cringeworthy moments.

Let’s start with the positives. It wasn’t all bad, and I still enjoy seeing Jennifer Lopez in rom-coms. Honestly, I loved her outfits and overall style in this movie. I think Jennifer Lopez looks good in anything. The acting was pretty solid from both the main cast and most of the supporting characters.

I especially loved Sidney Bloom (Betty Gilpin), Jackie’s right-hand woman. She was funny most of the time, and her facial expressions were fantastic. George Dudek from HR (Tony Hale) had very little screen time, but he did an amazing job as well. I also loved Daniel’s sister, who is in jail. I think she was the funniest character in the entire movie. I enjoyed the cultural differences between the USA and England, too. At times, the movie even gave me some good early-2000s rom-com vibes. There were definitely a few scenes that worked really well.

Now for the things I liked less. Right from the beginning, I got a Hallmark movie feeling. Some scenes felt a bit cheap. I don’t really know how to explain it, but if you’ve ever watched Hallmark movies, you’ll probably understand what I mean. There’s a difference between a polished movie and a typical Hallmark movie. I’m not saying Hallmark movies are bad, but the production quality often feels lower. I got that feeling from this movie every now and then, although there were also some scenes that looked much higher quality.

Then there were the jokes, and this is the biggest reason I gave the movie only 3/5 hearts. It was all a bit over the top. The movie felt like a constant stream of jokes. I read another review that said this movie was made for people with a terrible attention span, and I kind of agree. Jokes are important in a rom-com, but not every single minute. Sometimes it felt like the movie was trying too hard to keep the audience’s attention.

My least favorite part was probably the childbirth scene. Was it really necessary to make it so explicit? I would have deleted that scene entirely, along with the jokes they made while Sidney was giving birth.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about this movie. There were moments I genuinely liked and enjoyed, but there were also scenes that weren’t very funny and were sometimes even a little cringe-worthy.

Rating: 3/5 hearts.

He asks Duffy out on a date, and the two quickly start having a good time together. Before long, Connor is even spending time with Duffy’s brothers and father.

Review

I love Lynn Painter’s books, so when this one was recently released, I knew I had to read it too, and it definitely didn’t disappoint.

It’s another sports romance. I’ve been reading a lot of sports romances lately, and I honestly thought I was starting to get tired of the genre. But apparently not, because I absolutely devoured this book.

The story follows a fake-dating trope. Duffy pretends to date Connor to make her father happier. After losing Duffy’s mother a year earlier, her father is struggling with both grief and his own illness, so Duffy believes this fake relationship might cheer him up a little.

What Duffy doesn’t know is that Connor also has his own reason for fake-dating her. He’s using the relationship for positive PR for his football team after everyone discovers that the team mascot had been sexually harassing women during games. Of course, not telling Duffy the real reason behind the fake relationship was a huge mistake. But aside from that, Connor was actually a decent guy. He spent a lot of time with her family, genuinely cared about her, and was always there for her. The only real red flag was keeping the truth from her.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I finished this book in just a couple of hours. I was completely obsessed with it, and that’s one of the main reasons I gave it 5/5 stars. The banter between the two main characters was amazing, and honestly, good banter is probably one of my favorite things in romance books.

If I had to point out one thing that felt a little strange, it would be how much attention was given in the first few chapters to Duffy fainting. Apparently, she faints pretty easily whenever she gets nervous or has a crush on someone—especially celebrities. Because of that, I expected it to become a bigger part of the story and happen a few more times. But after the beginning, it was barely mentioned again. I thought it was going to play a much larger role throughout the book.

Overall, though, this was another Lynn Painter book that I really enjoyed. The banter was fantastic, and it was one of those books that you simply can’t stop reading—the kind of story you become completely obsessed with.

The Mistake

Logan was on his way to a party, but ended up at the wrong house. So instead of partying, he finds himself watching a movie with Grace. When they start making out, everything changes for Logan. He usually sleeps with different girls every night, but now he only has eyes for Grace.

Unfortunately for him, he says something stupid, and now he spends all his free time trying to prove to Grace that he is worth it and that he wants her back.

Review

I am speed-reading the first three books in the Off-Campus series. Apparently, you need to read the first three books before watching the show on Prime Video if you don’t want any spoilers. I thought reading just the first book would be enough, but apparently not. So now I’m reading books two and three. This was book number two in the series.

And I am really enjoying this series. Actually, I’m enjoying everything Elle Kennedy writes. Her books are so easy to read, and I enjoy every single minute of them. I literally finished this one in two nights; I was completely invested in the story.

Logan used to be a player, with a different girl every night. He has feelings for another girl, but she is taken, so instead he hooks up with other people to distract himself. Grace is the opposite; she has no experience because it never felt like the right moment for her.

She has a crush on Logan and eventually wants to hook up with him, but he says something that really hurts her feelings, and she ends up ghosting him. A few months later, they see each other again, and he asks for a second chance. She agrees; but only if he completes six challenges first.

I liked the characters. I mean, I didn’t like Logan when he was a player and using Grace. But luckily, he stops hooking up with other girls after he meets her. That’s kind of romantic in its own way. And he actually completes these crazy challenges, ones that a lot of men would probably give up on, so he earns a lot of bonus points there.

I also felt sorry for him because he is dealing with a lot in his life, including issues with his father. I liked Grace a lot as well. She is smart and knows how to set and protect her boundaries, and I really respect that.

Just like I mentioned before, I always enjoy these kinds of stories, and this time was no different. It was another page-turner. These books are perfect when you want something fun and cute to read. I’m expecting the rest of the series will be just as enjoyable as the first two books. I also have high expectations for the Off-Campus series overall.

Remarkably Bright Creatures

Tova, an elderly woman who cleans the local aquarium, needs extra help after an accident makes her job more difficult. Meanwhile, Cameron Cassmore is searching for his father, but with little success. In the meantime, he takes a cleaning job at the aquarium.

Tova teaches Cameron everything he needs to know, including the fact that he should keep an eye on Marcellus, the octopus who enjoys sneaking out of his tank for nighttime adventures.

Marcellus is old, and he knows the end of his life is approaching. After witnessing Tova’s accident, the octopus becomes determined to do one last thing before he dies: help heal Tova. And the new cleaning guy might just be the key to making that happen.

Review

This movie is based on the book by Shelby Van Pelt, which had been on my wishlist for a while. At the same time, I wasn’t entirely sure if it would be my kind of story, even though I had heard nothing but positive reviews and knew it had an amazing rating on Goodreads. So instead, I decided to watch the movie adaptation first.

And honestly… I don’t even know where to begin. This might be one of the best Netflix Originals I’ve seen in a long time. I usually check out most of Netflix’s new releases, but they often end up being average or sometimes just bad. Then, on rare occasions like this, you come across something truly special.

The cast was wonderful. Sally Field was phenomenal, and I also really loved Lewis Pullman’s performance. Honestly, everyone in this movie did an amazing job. The casting felt perfect.

The story itself was beautiful and emotional. I had expected it to be a slow-paced movie, which was actually one of the reasons I hesitated to read the book in the first place, but it never felt slow to me. From the very beginning, I was completely invested in the story.

I especially loved how Marcellus, the octopus, tried to heal Tova and fill the emptiness in her heart. Tova has been through so much, and Marcellus makes it his final mission to help her find a little happiness again. The bond between Tova and Marcellus was truly special and one of the most heartwarming parts of the movie.

The ending made me cry. Honestly, I think I saw it coming, but that didn’t stop me from crying hard. I’m not even going to deny it. I also don’t want to explain exactly why it made me emotional because I don’t want to spoil too much, but the ending beautifully combines sadness, love, and family.

If you’re looking for a movie to watch during your next movie night, I highly recommend this one. It’s a beautiful, heartwarming drama, and I genuinely loved everything about it. I honestly couldn’t find a single thing I disliked. The acting was amazing, the story was amazing, and the emotional moments felt incredibly real.

We definitely need more movies and stories like this.

Even though I watched the movie before reading the book, and therefore can’t compare the two, I still absolutely want to read the book someday.

It doesn’t take very long until she realizes that Theo is not only good-looking but also has a heart of gold. But Theo is hiding something big, and I’m not talking about the kittens he’s keeping in the extra bedroom.

Review

Usually, I start with the positive feedback, the things I liked about a book, before moving on to what I didn’t like. But this time, I feel like I should start with the “negative” points, because the things I liked less happened at the beginning of the book.

Sometimes I write down notes while reading that I can use later in my reviews. One of the things I wrote down this time was: man child. At the beginning, I really felt like Theo was just a big man-child. I mean, what 30-year-old needs a babysitter? It also seemed like he didn’t take life seriously; the kind of person who might never grow up. I also didn’t like the scene where he accused Laney of touching his morning wood when it was actually his own hand.

But you know what? Eventually, I started to really like Theo. He’s not very open about it, but he clearly cares about his sister and did everything he could to make the wedding a success. He paid for the wedding, put together the rehearsal dinner, and handled everything else when the resort staff wasn’t available. He was the one fixing everything. And honestly, how can you stay mad at a man who rescues kittens and takes care of them?

Laney was fine as a character, but spending more time with Theo really helped her grow. She grew up with very strict parents, works at their company, and is about to become the new CEO. Being around Theo made her braver, and she realized it’s okay to have fun too. At first, I thought it was strange that she still cared so much about her parents’ opinion and still followed their rules, but then I reflected on it and realized that it’s actually quite relatable. A lot of people crave their parents’ approval; I know I do sometimes.

This book was a lot of fun to read. I actually laughed out loud when I found out Theo’s big secret; I did not see that coming at all. It was hilarious. The Hawaiian setting also gave the story strong summer/vacation vibes. For a few hours, I felt like I was on a sunny island in a completely different world.

This is the first book in the Three BFFs and a Wedding series, and we already got a glimpse of Sabrina’s story. She had a one-night stand, and when she returns to work after the wedding, she discovers that he’s actually her new boss. That’s definitely going to be fun, and I can’t wait to read that book.

The only other thing I want to mention is that I’m not the biggest fan of epilogues. Most of the time, I don’t really care for them. This book has four epilogues, which felt like a bit of overkill to me. However, I did enjoy the bonus epilogues from Fred’s point of view; that was a fun and cute.
