Review

I love Lynn Painter’s books, so when this one was recently released, I knew I had to read it too, and it definitely didn’t disappoint.

It’s another sports romance. I’ve been reading a lot of sports romances lately, and I honestly thought I was starting to get tired of the genre. But apparently not, because I absolutely devoured this book.

The story follows a fake-dating trope. Duffy pretends to date Connor to make her father happier. After losing Duffy’s mother a year earlier, her father is struggling with both grief and his own illness, so Duffy believes this fake relationship might cheer him up a little.

What Duffy doesn’t know is that Connor also has his own reason for fake-dating her. He’s using the relationship for positive PR for his football team after everyone discovers that the team mascot had been sexually harassing women during games. Of course, not telling Duffy the real reason behind the fake relationship was a huge mistake. But aside from that, Connor was actually a decent guy. He spent a lot of time with her family, genuinely cared about her, and was always there for her. The only real red flag was keeping the truth from her.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I finished this book in just a couple of hours. I was completely obsessed with it, and that’s one of the main reasons I gave it 5/5 stars. The banter between the two main characters was amazing, and honestly, good banter is probably one of my favorite things in romance books.

If I had to point out one thing that felt a little strange, it would be how much attention was given in the first few chapters to Duffy fainting. Apparently, she faints pretty easily whenever she gets nervous or has a crush on someone—especially celebrities. Because of that, I expected it to become a bigger part of the story and happen a few more times. But after the beginning, it was barely mentioned again. I thought it was going to play a much larger role throughout the book.

Overall, though, this was another Lynn Painter book that I really enjoyed. The banter was fantastic, and it was one of those books that you simply can’t stop reading—the kind of story you become completely obsessed with.

The Mistake

Review

I am speed-reading the first three books in the Off-Campus series. Apparently, you need to read the first three books before watching the show on Prime Video if you don’t want any spoilers. I thought reading just the first book would be enough, but apparently not. So now I’m reading books two and three. This was book number two in the series.

And I am really enjoying this series. Actually, I’m enjoying everything Elle Kennedy writes. Her books are so easy to read, and I enjoy every single minute of them. I literally finished this one in two nights; I was completely invested in the story.

Logan used to be a player, with a different girl every night. He has feelings for another girl, but she is taken, so instead he hooks up with other people to distract himself. Grace is the opposite; she has no experience because it never felt like the right moment for her.

She has a crush on Logan and eventually wants to hook up with him, but he says something that really hurts her feelings, and she ends up ghosting him. A few months later, they see each other again, and he asks for a second chance. She agrees; but only if he completes six challenges first.

I liked the characters. I mean, I didn’t like Logan when he was a player and using Grace. But luckily, he stops hooking up with other girls after he meets her. That’s kind of romantic in its own way. And he actually completes these crazy challenges, ones that a lot of men would probably give up on, so he earns a lot of bonus points there.

I also felt sorry for him because he is dealing with a lot in his life, including issues with his father. I liked Grace a lot as well. She is smart and knows how to set and protect her boundaries, and I really respect that.

Just like I mentioned before, I always enjoy these kinds of stories, and this time was no different. It was another page-turner. These books are perfect when you want something fun and cute to read. I’m expecting the rest of the series will be just as enjoyable as the first two books. I also have high expectations for the Off-Campus series overall.

Remarkably Bright Creatures

Tova, an elderly woman who cleans the local aquarium, needs extra help after an accident makes her job more difficult. Meanwhile, Cameron Cassmore is searching for his father, but with little success. In the meantime, he takes a cleaning job at the aquarium.

Tova teaches Cameron everything he needs to know, including the fact that he should keep an eye on Marcellus, the octopus who enjoys sneaking out of his tank for nighttime adventures.

Marcellus is old, and he knows the end of his life is approaching. After witnessing Tova’s accident, the octopus becomes determined to do one last thing before he dies: help heal Tova. And the new cleaning guy might just be the key to making that happen.

Review

This movie is based on the book by Shelby Van Pelt, which had been on my wishlist for a while. At the same time, I wasn’t entirely sure if it would be my kind of story, even though I had heard nothing but positive reviews and knew it had an amazing rating on Goodreads. So instead, I decided to watch the movie adaptation first.

And honestly… I don’t even know where to begin. This might be one of the best Netflix Originals I’ve seen in a long time. I usually check out most of Netflix’s new releases, but they often end up being average or sometimes just bad. Then, on rare occasions like this, you come across something truly special.

The cast was wonderful. Sally Field was phenomenal, and I also really loved Lewis Pullman’s performance. Honestly, everyone in this movie did an amazing job. The casting felt perfect.

The story itself was beautiful and emotional. I had expected it to be a slow-paced movie, which was actually one of the reasons I hesitated to read the book in the first place, but it never felt slow to me. From the very beginning, I was completely invested in the story.

I especially loved how Marcellus, the octopus, tried to heal Tova and fill the emptiness in her heart. Tova has been through so much, and Marcellus makes it his final mission to help her find a little happiness again. The bond between Tova and Marcellus was truly special and one of the most heartwarming parts of the movie.

The ending made me cry. Honestly, I think I saw it coming, but that didn’t stop me from crying hard. I’m not even going to deny it. I also don’t want to explain exactly why it made me emotional because I don’t want to spoil too much, but the ending beautifully combines sadness, love, and family.

If you’re looking for a movie to watch during your next movie night, I highly recommend this one. It’s a beautiful, heartwarming drama, and I genuinely loved everything about it. I honestly couldn’t find a single thing I disliked. The acting was amazing, the story was amazing, and the emotional moments felt incredibly real.

We definitely need more movies and stories like this.

Even though I watched the movie before reading the book, and therefore can’t compare the two, I still absolutely want to read the book someday.

The Worst Wedding Date

To make things easier, Laney has to stay in the same cabin as Theo so she can keep an eye on him. They end up spending a lot of time together. Laney starts to loosen up, finally letting go of her strict rule-following ways.

It doesn’t take very long until she realizes that Theo is not only good-looking but also has a heart of gold. But Theo is hiding something big, and I’m not talking about the kittens he’s keeping in the extra bedroom.

Review

Usually, I start with the positive feedback, the things I liked about a book, before moving on to what I didn’t like. But this time, I feel like I should start with the “negative” points, because the things I liked less happened at the beginning of the book.

Sometimes I write down notes while reading that I can use later in my reviews. One of the things I wrote down this time was: man child. At the beginning, I really felt like Theo was just a big man-child. I mean, what 30-year-old needs a babysitter? It also seemed like he didn’t take life seriously; the kind of person who might never grow up. I also didn’t like the scene where he accused Laney of touching his morning wood when it was actually his own hand.

But you know what? Eventually, I started to really like Theo. He’s not very open about it, but he clearly cares about his sister and did everything he could to make the wedding a success. He paid for the wedding, put together the rehearsal dinner, and handled everything else when the resort staff wasn’t available. He was the one fixing everything. And honestly, how can you stay mad at a man who rescues kittens and takes care of them?

Laney was fine as a character, but spending more time with Theo really helped her grow. She grew up with very strict parents, works at their company, and is about to become the new CEO. Being around Theo made her braver, and she realized it’s okay to have fun too. At first, I thought it was strange that she still cared so much about her parents’ opinion and still followed their rules, but then I reflected on it and realized that it’s actually quite relatable. A lot of people crave their parents’ approval; I know I do sometimes.

This book was a lot of fun to read. I actually laughed out loud when I found out Theo’s big secret; I did not see that coming at all. It was hilarious. The Hawaiian setting also gave the story strong summer/vacation vibes. For a few hours, I felt like I was on a sunny island in a completely different world.

This is the first book in the Three BFFs and a Wedding series, and we already got a glimpse of Sabrina’s story. She had a one-night stand, and when she returns to work after the wedding, she discovers that he’s actually her new boss. That’s definitely going to be fun, and I can’t wait to read that book.

The only other thing I want to mention is that I’m not the biggest fan of epilogues. Most of the time, I don’t really care for them. This book has four epilogues, which felt like a bit of overkill to me. However, I did enjoy the bonus epilogues from Fred’s point of view; that was a fun and cute.

Review

This book was available on NetGalley, and I was immediately drawn to the title and the cover. I was curious about what the story would be about because it sounded like something I would enjoy.

The book follows Jasmine, a woman who gets dumped three months before her wedding and decides to go on a journey of self-discovery. But her journey isn’t easy. It’s messy, and she makes a lot of mistakes and hurts people along the way. Jasmine tries so hard to become a different person that she (almost) loses herself in the process.

I really liked the storyline, and honestly, it felt different from most of the books I’ve read over the past few years. Every time I thought Jasmine was going to do one thing, she surprised me by doing something completely different instead. There were several unexpected moments, and I always appreciate that in a story. This book wasn’t predictable at all, which made it stand out. I wouldn’t call it a typical romance novel, but in this case, that’s actually a good thing.

One of the things I loved most about this book was the strong Eat Pray Love vibes. Eat Pray Love mixed with Bali created such an enjoyable vibe. Honestly, while reading, I started daydreaming about booking my own trip to Bali. I’ve heard good things about Vipassana meditation retreats before, and this book captured exactly the kind of self-discovery journey I expected from that setting.

There were quite a few characters, but most of them were entertaining. I really disliked Dylan, the ex-fiancé, because he dumped Jasmine to be with another woman. I was honestly surprised that Jasmine stayed in contact with him and still considered him a possible option. I’m not sure whether Jasmine was naïve or simply very lost at that point in her life; probably a bit of both.

Jasmine definitely made choices that I personally would never make, although I would absolutely go to Bali for a Vipassana meditation retreat.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was fun, empowering, and unexpectedly different, and I loved the Eat Pray Love / Bali vibe throughout the story. This was my first time reading a book by Ava Wilde, but I’m definitely open to reading more of her work. I have a feeling she doesn’t write typical romance novels, and I like that.

Review

This is the second book in the Sky Ridge Hotshots series, which is written by three different authors, something I think is pretty cool. I really enjoyed the first book, Fight by Sloane St. James, and I was excited to read this one as well. I was already somewhat familiar with Paisley Hope, since I recently read three of her books and absolutely devoured them.

The books I previously read by Paisley all had a cowboy theme, and for some reason, I’m really enjoying cowboy romance stories. I’m not entirely sure why I find cowboys so attractive, but I’ve now discovered that I’m also drawn to firefighter romances.

The main characters, Rowan and Violette, are great. They have a lot of chemistry, even though their breakup years ago was messy. They’re still clearly attracted to each other, and you can really feel the tension between them. I especially liked Rowan because he’s such a gentleman. The small things he does for Violette and her daughter completely melted my heart. The three of them together were just incredibly cute.

But this book isn’t all sweetness. Early on, you get a clear sense of how dangerous Rowan’s job as a firefighter really is. He even gets into an accident and ends up in the hospital with burns. I happened to read this book while there was a wildfire in my country, which made it hit even harder. It really made me realize how dangerous this job is, and I definitely have a lot more respect for firefighters now. This aspect of the story also added some action, which I really enjoyed. It wasn’t all fluff and romance; I liked the balance between tension and love. I think that combination is my favorite, and it’s probably why I’d also enjoy romance stories about soldiers, even though I haven’t read any yet.

The reason I’m giving this book a 4/5 instead of a full 5/5 is that I usually reserve five-star ratings for books that make me laugh out loud, truly move me, or feel life-changing. This one came close, but not quite. Still, I can highly recommend both this book and the series.

It doesn’t help that the field manager, Emmett Montgomery, is a former All-Star turned coach who treats his players like family and the field like home. Everyone loves him. He’s not happy that his new boss seems to be all about numbers and money and doesn’t appear to care much about the team.

But after being forced to spend a lot of time together for work, Emmett realizes that she actually does care; she’s just afraid of making mistakes. And slowly, the spark between them becomes harder and harder to resist.

Review

I’m not always up to date with new releases, in the sense that I never really know which books are coming out in a year or even six months. So when I read the last book in The Windy City series about Rio, I thought that was it. I assumed it would be the final book in the series.

And technically, it was. This book is more of a standalone, but I still see it as part of the series anyway. So I was wrong, and I’m so happy that Liz Tomforde wrote this book.

The story is super cute, amazing, and uplifting. I’m all for girl power, especially when a woman works in a highly male-dominated field, and she’s the boss. How cool is that? I was definitely rooting for her and hating anyone who stood in her way or questioned her.

I understand why a lot of people thought she was cold, but she was just really focused on improving the team. She didn’t want any distractions, which made her come across that way, even though she wasn’t. So yeah, I really liked Reese.

And of course, I also liked Emmett. He appeared in the other books, and everyone already loves him. He’s the field manager, but the team feels like his family, which I thought was really sweet.

In my opinion, this is one of my favorite books in The Windy City series. Okay, technically, it isn’t part of the series according to Goodreads, but I’m counting it anyway.

It had everything I needed: girl power, so much chemistry, and great banter. I was eating it up. I loved this story so much.

And suddenly… I had a crush on an older man. He was basically the perfect man in my opinion, supportive, uplifting, and her biggest fan. I loved that.

Two weeks ago, I got the game Pokopia for my Switch 2, and I immediately started playing. Before that, I mostly played Animal Crossing, as it was my go-to cozy game. I’m not even lying when I say I’m addicted to Pokopia. I’m completely obsessed and enjoying every single minute of it. So, if you’re still not sure whether you should buy and play this game, I’ll give you a few reasons.

Reasons to Play Pokopia

1. It is super cozy
   I’m the kind of person who loves cozy games. I grew up playing The Sims for hours, and now the only games I play are Hello Kitty Island Adventure, Animal Crossing, and Pokopia. I love walking around and completing small tasks that require almost no effort. I can just take it slow. If you love cozy games too, this is the perfect game for you. You can even play mini-games with your Pokémon. You can jump rope with Bulbasaur or play hide-and-seek.
   
2. Pokémon
   If you love Pokémon, you’re going to love this game as well. I haven’t found all the Pokémon yet, but according to Google, there are over 300 Pokémon you can discover across different areas. Some of them are super cute, while others have special abilities that they can teach you or use to help you.
   
3. It is HUGE
   The moment I started playing Pokopia, I entered the first area and already thought it was big. It was much bigger than Animal Crossing. But then I started exploring, climbing mountains, and suddenly realized how massive it actually was, and that was only the beginning. Soon, you discover gates that lead to other areas, and those are just as big. I love how huge this world is.
   
4. There is so much to do
   I’ve only played for a couple of hours so far, and I’m already a bit overwhelmed, in a good way, by how much there is to do. Of course, you have daily tasks, but at the beginning, you also follow a storyline and complete bigger objectives. You need to raise your environment level, but you can also demolish things and rebuild them. The options are endless, which means you can easily play this game for hours or even weeks without getting bored.
   
5. You can build everything you want
   At the start, you can only do a few things, but the more you play and complete tasks, the more options unlock. You’ll discover more recipes for paths and bricks that you can use to build roads and houses. You can create a beautiful home for your Ditto, your Pokémon, or even build an entire town or city. The possibilities are basically endless.
   
   A lot more interaction than Animal Crossing
6. Sometimes I felt like Animal Crossing was a bit limited when it came to conversations with villagers. But Pokopia feels very different. There’s a lot more dialogue and interaction. Of course, I’m still at the beginning and haven’t completed the storyline yet, but my first impression is really positive.

Review

I had heard about Heated Rivalry, but for some reason, I decided to read the books first. Then I found out that the first book in the series isn’t Heated Rivalry, but Game Changer. And if I’m correct, the first season of the show is based on the second book. I want to read that one before watching it.

I have mixed feelings about this book, and like always, I like to start with the positives. It was extremely easy to read; you can fly right through it. I understand why it’s so popular. The characters are likable enough. I liked Scott the most. I felt sorry for him because he felt like he couldn’t truly be himself and had to hide his boyfriend.

I liked Kip a bit less because, after only two months, he was already pushing Scott to come out. While he understood Scott’s struggles, he didn’t want to be a secret anymore. I thought that felt a bit rushed; it had only been two months. Some straight couples don’t even tell their friends they’re dating at that point.

One thing I noticed is that the writing style felt almost like it was aimed at teenagers or young adults, while the content definitely isn’t for that audience. I read that this was Rachel Reid’s first book and that her later books are better written. I’m not blaming her or anything; it’s just something I picked up on.

Another thing I want to mention: there’s a lot of spice in this book, like, a lot. I’m not the biggest fan of that, especially when it feels like the plot takes a backseat to those scenes. I don’t mind a little bit of spice, but when there are more spicy scenes than actual plot, it’s just not for me. I read books for the story.

Overall, I gave it a 3 out of 5, which is decent. It wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t a favorite. I’m still planning to read the second book and then watch the show, I want to see what all the hype is about. People say it’s really that good, so I’m curious.

Roommates

Devon has just graduated and is about to start college. She’s hopeful about this new chapter; maybe now she can finally make real friends. Devon has never felt like she truly belonged in a friend group, and she hopes that will change.

At an introduction event to meet other students, she tries really hard to make a new friend, but people think she’s a bit weird. Then she meets Celeste, and they have a good time together. They even decide to become roommates.

But the friendship Devon imagined turns out to be nothing as she expected; it slowly turns into a war of passive aggression.

Review

I’m not even sure how to start this review. I was just bored and wanted to watch a movie, so I picked this one. I had zero expectations, although the trailer looked decent. But I ended up having a lot to say about it.

Let’s start with the positives. I think Roommates definitely had potential. I didn’t hate it, and some of the actors were good. The actress who plays Celeste did a solid job. I mean, the character is terrible, but she portrayed that really well.

However, Celeste isn’t the only main character; there’s also Devon. She’s the shy, “weird” girl who has never really had friends, which was somewhat relatable. But I felt like Sadie Sandler (who plays Devon) was missing something. At first, her facial expressions felt a bit off, like she was in pain or something and for the rest of the movie, her performance was just… meh. I think what was missing was charisma.

And that brings me to my next point. I’m okay with a “nepo baby” if they can actually act, but right now, I’m not convinced Sadie Sandler is a strong actress. Especially when you realize that her father, Adam Sandler, produced this movie, it kind of feels like this project exists because she wants to act, and he’s helping her. That said, I hope she proves me wrong. I usually give actors (and authors) several chances before I completely give up on them. Maybe it was the wrong movie or she just needs a little bit more experience.

Devon also develops a romantic interest in her TA, Michael, but there’s basically zero chemistry between them. Honestly, it felt like she had more chemistry with her brother than with Michael.

Now, about the story. According to IMDb, this is supposed to be a comedy… but where? I didn’t laugh once. I would describe it more as a coming-of-age story. The delivery robots felt completely pointless, and overall, the execution could have been much better.

The movie also has a “story within a story” structure. It follows two roommates who are constantly fighting, while Dr. Schilling tells them a story about Devon and Celeste. In my opinion, it would have been stronger if they had removed that outer storyline entirely. It didn’t add much and just felt unnecessary.

So overall, I’m not the biggest fan of this movie. I’m giving it a 2.5 out of 5. I still think it had a lot of potential, but lately it feels like many movies have great ideas and very poor execution.

I would recommend skipping this one; it was pretty forgettable.
