Sometimes you have to spend time alone, whether you want to or not. And while being alone can be nice, it can also get boring, especially when you have no idea what to do. You don’t want to spend hours on your phone doomscrolling either, because that never really makes you feel better.

But don’t worry, I made a list of things you can do when you’re alone. And honestly, I kind of like doing things alone. Of course, there are activities I prefer to share with other people, like going to concerts or events. But I also really enjoy doing things like shopping alone, where I don’t have to slow down for anyone else.

Things You Can Do When You Are Alone

Watch a documentary – Pick a topic that truly interests you. I’m currently obsessed with true crime documentaries.

Read books – This is absolutely my favorite activity when I’m alone. I can sit down for hours and escape into a completely different world. Especially when the book is really good, nothing else matters.

Watch your favorite series – When you’re alone, you don’t have to compromise. You can binge-watch all your guilty pleasures without explaining yourself.

Watch your favorite movie – I personally love watching a really sad movie when I’m alone, the kind that makes me cry uncontrollably.

Offline evening – It sounds boring, but it’s actually very calming. No phone, no scrolling, just you and whatever you feel like doing.

Listen to a podcast – Find an inspiring, comforting, or interesting podcast and just listen. Perfect for slow evenings.

Journal – Write down your thoughts and feelings. It’s a great way to release stress and clear your mind.

Make a vision board – A vision board helps you stay focused on your goals and dreams.

Write a letter or card – Instead of sending a quick message, write something by hand. It feels more personal and thoughtful.

Write a letter to your future self – Write down your goals, dreams, and thoughts, and send it to yourself. Receiving it later is surprisingly emotional and fun.

Make your own jewelry – Create bracelets or necklaces just for fun.

Color or puzzle – Do a sudoku or challenge yourself with a 1,000-piece puzzle.

Declutter your space – A clean home really does equal a calmer mind.

Declutter your clothes – Go through your wardrobe and let go of items you never wear.

Digital clean-up – Organize your photos, emails, and documents. We often forget our digital clutter.

Give your home a mini makeover – Add new pillows, a blanket, or candles to make your space cozier.

Bake something – You get to enjoy the process and a delicious dessert at the end.

. Make your favorite meal – I would make Italian food, buy a tiramisu for dessert, and fully enjoy it.

Treat yourself to coffee or a snack – Go to your favorite place and get something you love. I often walk to my favorite café for a croissant.

Lunch alone – Go to a nice place and order something fancy, just for you.

Go for a walk – Simple, healthy, and relaxing. You can combine it with getting coffee or tea.

Go for a bike ride – Very normal in the Netherlands, but still a lovely way to enjoy good weather.

Yoga – Relax your mind while making your body stronger.

Workout – Do a light workout at home or go to the gym.

Meditate – Sit in silence for 10–20 minutes and just breathe.

Watch the sunrise or sunset – Be present and enjoy the moment, especially near water or in nature.

Visit a botanical garden – Perfect if you love plants, flowers, and peaceful surroundings.

Go shopping – I actually prefer shopping alone. I can focus, get what I need, and leave.29. Visit a thrift store – Bookstores and thrift stores are my happy places. I need to see everything.

Visit a thrift store – Bookstores and thrift stores are my happy places. I need to see everything.

Go to the cinema – Watch the newest movies and don’t forget the popcorn.

Go to a museum – Look at art, paintings, and sculptures at your own pace.

Visit a new place in your country – You don’t always have to travel far to explore something new.

Go on a city trip – If you’re alone for a whole weekend, consider visiting a beautiful city and immersing yourself in a different culture.

Go to an event – Look up local events and just go.

Go to a concert alone – It sounds scary, but it can be incredibly fun. Stop caring about what others might think.

Learn a new language – I use Duolingo daily, and I’ve made so much progress.

Follow an online course – Learn something new, like playing an instrument or a creative skill.

Try something new – A new recipe, hobby, or activity you’ve never done before.

Tackle your to-do list – When you’re alone, there are fewer distractions. Put your phone away and see how much you can actually get done.

Plan a spa night at home – Face masks, nail polish, cozy pajamas, and total relaxation.

Pinterest inspiration time – I try to limit social media, but Pinterest is my favorite. It’s calming, inspiring, and really understands my taste.

Let’s get real for a second – the world often tells us that “being social” and “hanging with the squad” is the way to live your best life. But honestly? There’s something magical, liberating, and sometimes even life-changing about doing things solo. Think about it: no one else to coordinate schedules with, no compromising on what to eat or where to go, and no constant opinions or commentary. Just you, your vibe, and a whole world of possibilities!

So, let’s dive into why doing things alone can actually make your life better, more fun, and way more fulfilling.

Why You Should Do More Things Alone (And Totally Love It!)

Why You Should Do More Things Alone (And Totally Love It!)

1. You Get to Know You

When you do things alone, you’re giving yourself a golden opportunity to get to know yourself. Like, really know yourself. We’re all influenced by our friends, family, and social circles, which can make it hard to figure out what you actually enjoy doing, eating, or even watching.

Imagine having a free day to just walk around a city or your favorite park. You’re not worried about anyone else’s interests or timeline, and you get to discover what naturally pulls you in. Maybe you find yourself drawn to a cozy bookstore, or you might stumble upon a gallery and end up falling in love with abstract art. The possibilities are endless because you’re following your own compass.

2. Say Goodbye to Social Pressure

When you’re with people, there’s always a bit of an unspoken social script. You don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable, or maybe you’re trying to fit in. But when you’re alone, there’s none of that. You don’t have to pretend to enjoy that weird movie your friend swore was “life-changing.” You don’t need to wear that dress you kinda hate just because everyone else is dressing up.

Picture This: Going to a café alone and ordering that decadent, over-the-top dessert you’ve been eyeing on Instagram, eating it slowly with zero judgment. Trust me, there’s no one rushing you, and you won’t have to listen to “Oh, I shouldn’t” from anyone else. You can just blissfully enjoy every bite.

3. It Builds Confidence Like Crazy

Doing things alone can feel a bit awkward at first. You might think people are staring or silently judging you, but here’s a secret: they’re probably not! And the more you do things solo, the less you’ll care. This is where the magic happens. You start to realize that you’re capable of taking yourself out, exploring new places, and making decisions – all on your own.

Let’s say you take yourself on a solo trip to a city you’ve never been to before. It might feel intimidating at first, but soon enough, you’ll be navigating the subway, chatting with locals, or confidently strolling through busy streets like a pro. Each experience adds a little more confidence to your stash, and suddenly, the idea of trying new things or facing challenges feels way less daunting.

4. Embrace the Power of Doing What You Actually Want

You know those nights when you spend an hour deciding what movie to watch or where to eat because nobody can agree? Yeah, that doesn’t happen when you’re alone. Doing things solo gives you the ultimate say in how your day unfolds, which can feel ridiculously refreshing. There’s no compromising, no settling for the “next best” option – it’s just your way or… well, your way.

Imagine spending a day at a museum and actually stopping to read the captions for once, or going to a park and taking your sweet time at every single sculpture or fountain that catches your eye. No one’s huffing impatiently or pushing you along.

5. It Boosts Your Creativity

When you’re with people, your focus is often on the conversation, the vibe, or just the experience of being with others. But when you’re alone, you tend to notice things you might have missed in a group setting. Maybe it’s a unique pattern in the sidewalk, or a quirky conversation between two strangers nearby. Alone time lets your brain wander, soak in your surroundings, and make unexpected connections.

Next time you’re out on your own, bring a notebook or use your phone to jot down observations. You’ll be surprised how many ideas, reflections, or creative sparks come up.

6. Solitude = Self-Care

We all talk about self-care, but sometimes we forget that self-care is as simple as giving ourselves time alone. It’s during solo moments that you can recharge, process emotions, and connect with yourself without any external distractions. Whether you’re doing a mini-spa night, taking a solo road trip, or just spending time with your thoughts, these alone moments are perfect for nurturing your mental and emotional health.

Fun Things You Can Do Alone

Alright, so now that you know why alone time is amazing, let’s talk about some fun solo activities you can try!

1. Solo Movie Night at the Theater
Go ahead, book that ticket for the best seat, and bring ALL the snacks. Laugh out loud, cry, or get totally lost in the story – without worrying about someone whispering, “What just happened?”

2. Take a Day Trip
Hop on a train, a bus, or into your car and head somewhere new for a day. Explore the town, grab lunch at a cute café, and just soak in the sights. You’ll feel like an adventurer in your own little world!

3. Try a New Restaurant
Eating alone doesn’t have to be awkward. Bring a book or a notebook, sit at the bar if you’re more comfortable, and enjoy the food. Bonus: you don’t have to share!

4. Go to a Museum or Art Gallery
Walk around at your own pace, linger at the exhibits you love, and skip the ones you don’t. You’ll get so much more out of the experience when you’re not waiting for someone to catch up or feeling rushed.

5. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day
Book a massage, get a facial, or even just chill in a sauna for the day. Sometimes, all you need is a few hours of pampering to feel completely recharged.

6. Take Yourself on a Shopping Date
Go to your favorite stores, try on outfits, and buy yourself something nice without the pressure of someone else’s opinions or judgment. It’s retail therapy done right!

Final Thoughts

Learning to love your own company is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. So next time you feel like you “need” someone to join you, pause and ask yourself: “Do I really?” You might just find that you’re actually pretty great company!
