Some Kind of Famous

Merritt Valentine used to be super famous, but ten years later she leads a completely different life in Crested Peak. She now lives with her twin sister Olivia and Dev. But Olivia is pregnant, and they need Merritt’s bedroom for the babies. So Merritt has to move out. She already bought a house, but it still needs to be fixed up. For that, she asks Niko for help. The first time they met was when she was half-naked in the shower, so she’s a little scared to ask him.

Niko is done with relationships for now. He’s only “dating” short term, with people who don’t stay in Crested Peak too long. His heart has been broken before, and he doesn’t want to experience that again.

Review

I’ve read a book by Ava Wilder before, but apparently I gave that book (How to Fake It in Hollywood) only two stars on Goodreads. So I guess I wasn’t the biggest fan. But I always like to give an author a second or sometimes even a third chance, and that’s what I did.

The whole story takes place in Crested Peak, a very small town where everybody knows everybody. It’s hard to keep a secret because everyone likes to gossip. But on the other hand, people help each other all the time. And small town life means it’s quiet and more relaxed than the city. I like the quiet, so I always love reading books that take place in small towns.

Now, the biggest issue I had with this book isn’t even the author’s fault. It was hard for me to connect with the main characters. I just didn’t care about them at all. I thought it was a little weird that Merritt had issues with substances and was still drinking a lot sometimes. But the character I liked the least was Olivia. I thought she was a terrible sister. She complained so much, saying Merritt was always in the spotlight, but Olivia couldn’t even see what Merritt was doing for her. She was an annoying side character.

And because I didn’t like the main characters, I also didn’t care about the whole story. Merritt has been through a lot when she was famous, and there is a whole reason why she had to leave that world because it was simply not healthy for her. Yes, I felt sorry for her when she talked about those times.

Overall, I wouldn’t give this less than three stars on Goodreads, but also not higher because I just couldn’t connect with the main characters. It’s not the author’s fault. I checked the reviews on Goodreads and most people gave this a four-star rating, which is pretty good. So a lot of people did connect with the characters and liked the book a lot. I think this book just wasn’t the right one for me.
