I love the holiday season and especially Christmas. Everyone is in a festive mood and everything is decorated beautifully. Christmas Day is the one time of year that feels like a warm hug filled with lights, laughter, and little traditions that make the season sparkle. Whether you’re spending it with family, friends, or having a quiet solo Christmas, there are endless ways to make it feel special. Here are some lovely things to do on Christmas Day to fill it with joy, coziness, and connection.

Festive Things To Do on Christmas Day

1. Watch Christmas Movies
Nothing says Christmas like curling up under a blanket, sipping hot chocolate, and watching classic Christmas movies. From Home Alone and The Holiday to Elf and Love Actually, these films instantly set the festive mood. Bonus idea: make it a movie marathon! Don’t forget to prepare some Christmas-themed snacks before the movie.

2. Do Christmas-Themed Coloring Books
Coloring isn’t just for kids. It’s relaxing, creative, and a surprisingly cozy way to spend a quiet Christmas morning. Grab a Christmas coloring book, put on some soft music, and let your imagination bring snowflakes, ornaments, and Santa’s sleigh to life. I really love those easier, popular coloring books that are trending right now. I’m talking about ones like this or this.

3. Play Board Games
Gather everyone for some friendly competition! Whether it’s Monopoly, Clue, Scrabble, or a Christmas trivia game, board games are the perfect way to laugh, bond, and create memories together.

4. Read Christmas Books
I love reading, and I love Christmas and those two combined are the best. This season, I’m reading several Christmas-themed romances like Merry Christmas, You Filthy Animal, Holiday Ever After, and A Heart for Christmas. But of course, you can also go for a thriller or any other genre you enjoy.

5. Bake Something Delicious
Fill your home with the smell of freshly baked cookies or gingerbread. Baking together (or just for yourself) is such a heartwarming ritual. Decorate sugar cookies, bake a cake, or try homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast.

6. Have a Christmas Karaoke Session
Turn your living room into a festive stage! Sing along to your favorite holiday hits like All I Want for Christmas Is You, Last Christmas, and Jingle Bell Rock are always musts. Don’t worry about sounding perfect; it’s all about having fun. You can even set a dress code, maybe everyone wears an ugly Christmas sweater or a Christmas-themed costume!

7. Attend a Christmas Concert
If your town hosts concerts or live caroling events, go soak in the music and cheer. There’s something magical about hearing a choir sing Silent Night or watching an orchestra perform festive classics.

8. See the Christmas Lights
Bundle up, grab a warm drink, and go for a walk (or drive) to admire the Christmas lights in your neighborhood. It’s a simple but enchanting tradition that never gets old. Where I live, there’s one neighborhood that goes all out during the holiday season, and I always love walking around there in the evening. Everything is beautifully decorated and maybe even a little over the top for some people, but I love it.

9. Eat Out (or Order In!)
If you want to skip cooking this year, treat yourself to a special Christmas meal at a cozy restaurant or order your favorite comfort food and make it a relaxed, no-stress day. There’s no right or wrong way to celebrate Christmas. If you just want to chill and order food, do that! I know a lot of people who love doing absolutely nothing on Christmas Day.

10. Visit a Christmas Market
If there’s one open nearby, take a stroll through a Christmas market filled with twinkling lights, handmade gifts, and festive treats. It’s the perfect spot for soaking in the holiday atmosphere (and maybe grabbing one last gift).

11. Exchange Gifts
Whether big or small, heartfelt gifts are a beautiful way to show appreciation and love. Gather around the tree, share your presents, and take your time, because the joy is in the giving and the receiving. I have a few things on my wishlist for this Christmas, but honestly, I’d already be grateful for just one small thing.

12. Drink Hot Chocolate
Top it with whipped cream, marshmallows, or a sprinkle of cinnamon. It’s the ultimate Christmas comfort drink. Make it extra special by setting up a “hot chocolate bar” with toppings so everyone can create their own festive drink.

13. Go Ice Skating
End your Christmas Day with something magical, gliding across an ice rink surrounded by twinkling lights. It’s festive, fun, and the perfect mix of nostalgia and joy. It’s also a great way to be a little more active on Christmas Day! Afterwards, warm up with hot chocolate, then relax and watch Christmas movies when you get home. Sounds like the perfect Christmas Day to me.

Christmas is around the corner and I am so excited. Most of the houses in my neighbourhood are already beautifully decorated with Christmas lights, and I can’t wait to watch all of my favourite Christmas movies again. For me, Christmas is about having fun, spending time with the people you love, and simply relaxing. Christmas and New Year’s Eve are my favourite holidays of the year. A lot of people also celebrate Christmas by giving each other gifts. While I don’t do that, I still thought about the things I would have asked for and made my Christmas wishlist.

My Christmas Wishlist

I love reading, so obviously I had to add a couple of books. The first book on my list is Duke because I started that series recently and I’m loving it so far. I’ve also heard that God of Malice is amazing, so I want to try that one too. Heated Rivalry is a TV series now, I believe, so I’m curious to see what the story is about. I love an Ana Huang book every now and then, and since I got the special edition of the Twisted series as an early Christmas gift, I want to try her other series as well.

I’ve also heard a lot about A Little Life. Apparently it’s very sad, so I’m a bit scared to start it. And the last book on my wishlist is The Housemaid Is Watching. I loved the first two books in the series, so I definitely want to read this one too.

I also added a couple of CDs to my wishlist. I love the new album by Rosalía, in my opinion it’s the best album of 2025. And I’d love to add two “best of” albums to my collection. I grew up with Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, so having their greatest hits on CD would make me so happy.

Then I also added a couple of clothing items to my Christmas wishlist. I’m building a wardrobe with lots of basics and only pieces I truly love. The items you see above are things I added to my wishlist a long time ago.

The first top is just really cute and pretty. I’ve also been loving dress pants lately. I already found a black pair from H&M at the thrift store, but I’d love to add this brown pair as well. The two shirts (dark brown and white) are the same style I bought a black one a few years ago and it’s my favorite shirt ever. It’s super comfortable, so I’d love to have more colors.

And the shoes are kind of a necessity. I do have shoes, but only two pairs: one pair I wear every single day, and one backup pair for when the other pair gets wet. But they’re both getting old and not in the best condition anymore, so I need to start looking for new ones. I really like the black and white Adidas pair. And I’d love to add Chelsea boots to my collection. I used to have a pair like these, and now I only own sneakers, so it would be nice to have one pair of “pretty” shoes again.

The post My Christmas Wishlist | 2025 first appeared on Bettie Toon.

<p>The post My Christmas Wishlist | 2025 first appeared on Bettie Toon.</p>

Watch this movie now on Netflix

Champagne Problems

Sydney Price travels to France to secure the acquisition of a renowned champagne brand before Christmas. She promised her sister that she would also have fun on the trip, because she’s always working. On her first night in Paris, Sydney visits a bookstore where she meets Henri. They have a wonderful night together. The next day, she finds out that he’s actually the son of the owner of the champagne company.

Review

I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this movie. I don’t even think I watched the trailer. But I am a simple girl: when I see a new Christmas movie, I have to watch it. And I have a lot to tell you guys.

Let’s start with the story. Technically, this could be a Hallmark movie plot. Hallmark always uses the same formula, and this movie basically follows it. Sometimes Netflix uses the same formula. But at the same time, it didn’t feel like a Hallmark movie. I actually enjoyed it a lot.

First of all, the characters are amazing. Sydney and Henri are both so likable. Henri is French, and if you’re like me and love other languages, you’ll enjoy that. My daily French lessons on Duolingo are paying off, because I could understand a little bit of it. I also have to mention two other characters who, in my opinion, completely stole the show: Roberto and Otto. If you’ve seen The Rookie, then you might recognize Skip tracer Randy, the actor (Flula Borg) plays Otto in this movie. I screamed when I saw him. I did not expect that. Otto is this weird German guy with a very dark mind, and Roberto is super rich, loves champagne, and is genuinely hilarious. He made me laugh so many times.

There were other things I loved about this movie too. The chemistry between the main characters was great. I loved that the story takes place in Paris/France, you don’t get views like that in the USA. I appreciated that Netflix actually used French actors for a half-French movie and that they actually speak French. I always love that.

Last week, I watched A Merry Little Ex-Mas on Netflix (also a new Christmas movie), and suddenly I realized how bad that movie was compared to this one. Champagne Problems was an actual good rom-com. It had all the right ingredients and never got cringey.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching this movie. I laughed so many times because of Roberto. All of the actors were great, and I think I’ll watch it again in the future.

The post Champagne Problems (2025) | Movie Review first appeared on Bettie Toon.

<p>The post Champagne Problems (2025) | Movie Review first appeared on Bettie Toon.</p>

A Merry Little Ex-Mas

Kate and Everett are getting a divorce, although they don’t call it that, they call it a conscious uncoupling. In the week before Christmas, Kate finds out that Everett is already dating someone new. Suddenly, he actually has time for his children and Christmas activities, whereas he used to be at work all the time. This whole situation creates tension, and then Chet shows up and he’s very interested in Kate.

A Merry Little Ex-Mas

I was looking forward to this exact moment: the first new Christmas movie on Netflix. And the cast is amazing! We have Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) and Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina), who were my favorites growing up. So, I definitely had high expectations.

This movie was a mix of weirdness and fun, I guess? Some things were a bit strange, but let’s focus on what I actually liked. I loved seeing my favorite actresses, Melissa and Alicia, again, that was already a bonus. Although Melissa’s role is very small, Alicia plays Kate, one of the main characters. She’s kind of jealous that her soon-to-be ex-husband has already found a new girlfriend. I could definitely see the chemistry between Kate and Everett.

The story was nice, though it kind of reminded me of a Hallmark movie. It was like a mix of a Hallmark Christmas movie and a slightly more polished Christmas movie, if that makes sense. I enjoy Hallmark movies sometimes, but let’s be honest — most of them are a bit weird and always follow the same story. They often give off low-budget vibes, but I think this one was a little better than that. Plus, there were a few genuinely beautiful moments.

The reason I didn’t love the movie was because of the weirdness Nigel and Chet brought. Nigel is English, so he must be a Harry Potter fan, but that was a little too much for me. And Chet was a bit odd too. Honestly, it didn’t make sense that Kate would actually date him.

So overall, it was just an okay movie for me. I’m not sure if I’d watch it again. Most Netflix Christmas movies are a miss, I mean, I’ll still watch them and kind of enjoy them, but I wouldn’t watch them twice. That said, I did like Holidate, Love Hard, and maybe one or two others. I’m just hoping they release one really good Christmas movie that I can watch over and over again.

Merry Gentlemen

Ashley had been performing with the Jingle Belles on Broadway, but her career took an unexpected turn when she was let go for being “too old.” Feeling disappointed, she returned to her hometown to stay with her parents. Upon her arrival, Ashley discovered that her parents were struggling to keep their beloved performing venue, the Rhythm Room, afloat due to mounting rent issues. Determined to help, she quickly devised a bold plan to save the venue: an all-male, Christmas-themed revue.

Review

Another week, another Christmas movie released by Netflix! I absolutely love this time of year. I’m already looking forward to the next holiday release, especially the one starring Lindsay Lohan, which is coming out later this week. So far, Hot Frosty remains my favorite Christmas movie of the season, even after watching Merry Gentlemen.

Let’s start with the positives. I love Britt Robertson and Chad Michael Murray—they’re both fantastic actors. It was also great to see Beth Broderick again! The last time I saw her on-screen was in Sabrina the Teenage Witch (back in the 2000s) and Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. It was refreshing to watch her in a different role this time. Another thing I appreciated was the choice to cast “normal”-looking guys as the other dancers. Sure, they all had amazing six-packs, but one of the dancers was older, which felt more realistic for a small-town setting.

This movie is essentially a Christmas-themed remake of Magic Mike. Both revolve around all-male, half-naked dance performances, with the main character finding love along the way. It’s been a while since I watched Magic Mike, but I remember the dancing being much more polished. In Merry Gentlemen, the choreography felt a bit awkward and definitely less spicy. It’s more family-friendly, which makes sense for a Christmas movie.

I do have one big question about Ashley’s career: she was a dancer for the Jingle Belles on Broadway, which is a Christmas-themed show. But what did she do for the rest of the year? Did she not have another job? And when she moved back to her small hometown, it seemed like she left her life in the city behind with no hesitation. What about her apartment and everything else?

While the main characters had decent chemistry, the romance felt a little rushed. I also wish Ashley’s parents had a bigger presence in the story. It’s their venue, after all, but they barely had any screen time or lines. Lastly, I was hoping for more Christmas vibes from this movie. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite capture the holiday magic I was expecting.

That said, the movie was still fun to watch! The cast was great, and if you enjoy these types of lighthearted Christmas films, you’ll probably enjoy this one too. Just don’t go in expecting award-winning material—it’s a feel-good holiday flick, nothing more, nothing less.

The post Merry Gentlemen | Netflix Original | Movie Review first appeared on Bettie Toon.

<p>The post Merry Gentlemen | Netflix Original | Movie Review first appeared on Bettie Toon.</p>

Meet Me Next Christmas

Last year, Layla met a wonderful man at the airport. At the time, she was in a happy relationship, but they made a deal: if both of them were single by next Christmas, they’d meet again at the Pentatonix concert. For the next 11 to 12 months, Layla didn’t think about him—until, just a few days before Christmas, she discovered her boyfriend cheating on her. Now, she’s determined to do whatever it takes to get tickets to the Pentatonix concert and see her dream man again. However, with the concert sold out, she hired someone to help her secure those tickets.

Review

It’s that time of year again, and I’m loving it! I adore romance movies and Christmas movies, so the two combined is just perfection—well, most of the time. I watch a lot of Hallmark Christmas movies, and while not all of them are hits, this one was charming and romantic.

The chemistry between the main characters was definitely there, and they were both quite likable. The cast overall is great, and the actors did a good job bringing the story to life. I enjoyed watching the leads work together to get those tickets, and I thought it was sweet that they were doing everything as a team. The movie gave me all the Christmas vibes I was hoping for, which is essential in a holiday movie.

However, I did have one issue. If Layla was truly happy in her relationship, why did she drop everything to pursue a man she met just once? If someone were really happy in a relationship, wouldn’t they be devastated first? But as soon as she finds out her boyfriend is cheating, she immediately moves on. That was my biggest issue with the movie.

That said, when you watch a movie like this, you can’t expect too much. Even with a strong cast, it’s really just a fun, cheesy Christmas movie. It’s perfect for escaping reality for a little while. Thankfully, it wasn’t overly cringy like some holiday romances can be. I also loved seeing Christina Milian in another Netflix movie!

Overall, Meet Me Next Christmas was a delightful Christmas rom-com. If you’re a fan of Hallmark Christmas movies, you might enjoy this one too. It’s cute, and sweet, has real chemistry between the leads, and gives off that cozy Christmas vibe, making it perfect for the season.

The post Meet Me Next Christmas | Netflix Original | Movie Review first appeared on Bettie Toon.

<p>The post Meet Me Next Christmas | Netflix Original | Movie Review first appeared on Bettie Toon.</p>

All I want for Christmas

Sadie Hunter and Max Brody are selected to be a part of the reality singing show, Starmaker, and they are ready for their big break. But after doing one duet on the show, everyone talks about Saxie. They want to see them together as a duo. Both can only continue to the next round if they decide to continue as a duo. If not, one of them will have to go home and it will likely be Sadie. Their managers think it is a great opportunity if they would sing together and fake a relationship from now on. The only problem is that they don’t really like each other that much.

Review

It was Christmas and I was in the mood to read something related to Christmas. I found this e-book a while ago because it was on sale. The cover looked cute too. I am a big sucker for cute covers.

The story takes place in Nashville. Max Brody is already sort of famous because his dad is a famous artist and Max is already making music, but he wants to make music on his terms and not what is popular. For Sadie, this is a whole different situation. This is her last chance to be famous and if she fails she has to go home. But they are pretty similar as well. Max and Sadie both have family issues. Max with his dad and Sadie with her mother.

I liked the story. Did it give me Christmas vibes? Not really, but it was still cute to read. My favorite parts of the book were when they were actually getting along and when they were having fun. It was not like they hated each other, they just made mistakes.
I liked the characters. I thought it was cool that Max loved knitting because it helped him with anxiety. It is better than alcohol and drugs. I loved his dog, Patsy. She was cute. I had to google the dog breed (a papillon mix) because I had no idea what kind of dog it was, but it is the cutest dog. If I were to get a dog one day, a papillon would definitely be an option.
Sadie was likable too. She wanted to do whatever it took to be famous because she loved singing so much. I felt sorry for her when Cruz was assaulting and using her. I wanted to punch that guy in the face. And their managers were pretty cool too, they were helpful. Some managers care more about money.

Last year, I read ‘The Holiday Swap’ by Maggie Knox, and this year I read this one. I think I might prefer the holiday swap. But it wasn’t a bad book. The things I liked the most were the parts when Max and Sadie were getting along, the dog Patsy, and how nice most of the characters were.
Things I didn’t like that much: Cruz (obviously), the fighting between Max and Sadie about stupid things (it happened too often), and a lot of miscommunication or even non-communication. I think communication is key in a relationship and that was definitely missing. And there were still answers missing in this book. Who contacted Max when he got a text? What happened to the rental car Sadie used? And it was missing flow, which made it harder to read. It took more effort to read this one.

If you want to read a book by Maggie Knox, I would recommend The Holiday Swap instead of this one.
The magic of Christmas doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. In fact, some of the most meaningful and cherished celebrations arise from creativity, intentionality, and a dash of frugality. If you find yourself on a budget this holiday season, fear not! Here’s a guide on how to celebrate Christmas with less money while still making it a joyous and memorable occasion.

How to Celebrate Christmas with Less Money

Embrace DIY Decorations:

Create a cozy and festive atmosphere without breaking the bank by making your own decorations. Get creative with handmade ornaments, paper snowflakes, and garlands crafted from materials you already have at home or from things you can find in nature. Not only is this approach cost-effective, but it also adds a personal touch to your holiday decor.

Host a Potluck Feast:

The holiday season is synonymous with feasting, but that doesn’t mean you have to bear the entire cost. Consider hosting a potluck-style gathering where each guest contributes a dish. This not only eases the financial burden but also adds variety to the menu, creating a communal and sharing atmosphere.

Set a Gift Budget:

Gift-giving is a heartfelt tradition, but it’s easy for expenses to spiral out of control. Set a reasonable budget for gifts and get creative. Handmade gifts, personalized gestures, or even the gift of time (such as offering to babysit or help with chores) can be just as meaningful as expensive presents. Christmas is not just about giving and receiving gifts, it is mostly about spending time with each other.

Explore Thrift Stores and Dollar Stores:

Thrift stores and dollar stores can be treasure troves for budget-friendly holiday finds. From festive decorations to wrapping paper and even small gifts, these stores offer affordable options that can contribute to a festive atmosphere without draining your wallet. I personally love Thrift Stores, not just because they are so cheap. All of the things are original. You can find unique collector’s items for less.

Organize a Secret Santa:

If you have a large circle of friends or family, consider organizing a Secret Santa gift exchange. Drawing names and setting a budget ensures that everyone receives a thoughtful gift without anyone feeling financially strained. It adds an element of surprise and anticipation to the celebration. Me and my friends always did this when we were in high school. We were still young, so we did not have tons of money, so most of the time our budget was like 5-10 euros. But we organized a whole party with snacks and all. It was so much fun. We had the best time ever.

Opt for Experience Gifts:

Consider giving the gift of experiences rather than physical items. Plan a movie night, a scenic hike, or a homemade dinner as a thoughtful and budget-friendly alternative. Memories often outlast material possessions, making experience gifts a wonderful way to celebrate without overspending. Sometimes you can find experiences with a lot of discounts. There must be a website where you can buy experiences for less.

Utilize Free or Low-Cost Events:

Many communities host free or low-cost holiday events, from tree-lighting ceremonies to carol concerts. Take advantage of these opportunities to soak in the festive atmosphere without spending a dime. Check local event calendars for budget-friendly options in your area. Or just enjoy the Christmas party at work.

DIY Wrapping Paper:

Wrap your gifts in style without splurging on expensive wrapping paper. Use brown paper bags, old newspapers, or even fabric scraps to create unique and eco-friendly wrapping. Add a touch of creativity with personalized drawings, stamps, or ribbons for a festive finish. Most people don’t even care about the wrapping paper, because they only care about what’s inside, especially kids. For them, you don’t have to buy the most expensive wrapping paper.

Plan a Movie Marathon:

Celebrate the season with a cozy movie marathon featuring your favorite holiday films. Pop some popcorn, make hot cocoa, and enjoy a festive evening at home. It’s a simple yet delightful way to embrace the holiday spirit without spending money on expensive outings. It is honestly one of my favorite ways to spend Christmas evening. It is all I need.

Volunteer Together:

The true essence of Christmas lies in giving, and one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate is by volunteering together as a family or with friends. Find local charities or community events that could use an extra pair of hands, and spend time giving back to those in need.

Celebrating Christmas with less money doesn’t mean sacrificing the joy and warmth of the season. By embracing creativity, focusing on meaningful experiences, and making intentional choices, you can create a festive and memorable celebration without straining your budget. Remember, the most cherished moments often arise from the love and connection shared during the holiday season, rather than the price tag attached to the festivities.

The holiday season, with its array of social gatherings and festivities, can be a time of joy and connection. However, for individuals dealing with social anxiety, the prospect of navigating crowded parties and family gatherings can evoke feelings of apprehension and stress. If you find yourself grappling with social anxiety during the holidays, rest assured that you’re not alone. Here’s a guide on how to handle social anxiety during Christmas

How to Handle Social Anxiety during Christmas

Acknowledge Your Feelings:

The first step in managing social anxiety is acknowledging and accepting your feelings. It’s okay to feel anxious, and recognizing this is an essential part of the process. Give yourself the grace to experience these emotions without judgment. Just notice when you are feeling anxious, don’t try to push it away, it will go away eventually.

Set Realistic Expectations:

Social expectations during the holidays can be overwhelming. Instead of pressuring yourself to be the life of the party or engage in constant socializing, set realistic expectations. Focus on meaningful connections and quality interactions rather than quantity. You don’t have to be the center of the party to have fun. It is completely fine if you just interact with one person all night

Practice Self-Compassion:

Be kind to yourself. Remember that it’s okay to take breaks, step away if needed, and prioritize your well-being. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer to a friend facing similar challenges. When it is overwhelming, go to the bathroom or go outside to take a deep breath. Or when it is too much and you want to go home, go home.

Prepare and Plan Ahead:

Anticipate social situations and plan accordingly. Have a list of conversation starters or topics that interest you. Knowing what to expect can help ease anxiety. Arrive early to smaller gatherings, giving yourself time to acclimate before the crowd grows. Find a spot that makes you feel more comfortable.

Bring a Support System:

If possible, bring a trusted friend or family member with you to social events. Having a familiar face can provide comfort and a sense of security. Knowing that you have someone you can lean on can make social situations more manageable. Bring someone you can trust and wouldn’t leave you alone.

Focus on Breathing and Grounding Techniques:

When anxiety arises, practice deep breathing or grounding techniques to center yourself. Pay attention to your breath and engage in mindfulness exercises. This can help calm your nervous system and bring you back to the present moment. You can also do this before you go to the social event. When you are anxious you are breathing faster and when you start breathing slower again, it will also lower your stress and anxiety.

Set Boundaries:

It’s crucial to recognize your limits and set boundaries. If a particular social event feels overwhelming, it’s okay to decline the invitation especially when you already went to different parties that week. Communicate your needs and prioritize self-care. Remember that taking care of your mental health is a valid and important choice. Sure, getting over your social anxiety would be nice, but you do that step by step and not force yourself to go to a party every single night and make yourself feel exhausted. That would make the anxiety even worse.

Challenge Negative Thoughts:

Social anxiety often comes with a barrage of negative thoughts and self-doubt. Challenge these thoughts by reframing them with positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your strengths and previous successes in social situations. Every time you think something negative, come up with one positive thing in that exact moment. Maybe you are having a great conversation with someone or the wine (or other drink) you’ve been drinking that night is delicious. Or maybe the house is really beautiful decorated.

Seek Professional Support:

If social anxiety significantly impacts your daily life, consider seeking support from a mental health professional. Therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can provide effective strategies for managing social anxiety and improving overall well-being.

Celebrate Small Victories:

Acknowledge and celebrate small victories in social situations. Whether it’s initiating a conversation, staying at an event for a set amount of time, or expressing yourself more openly, recognize and celebrate your progress. Celebrate each step you take.

Managing social anxiety during the holiday season is a journey that involves self-awareness, self-compassion, and the implementation of practical strategies. By taking deliberate steps to understand and address your anxiety, you can navigate social gatherings with greater ease and, perhaps, even find moments of joy and connection during this festive season. Remember that your well-being is a priority, and embracing a mindset of self-care can make a significant difference in how you experience the holidays.

The holiday season is a time of celebration, joy, and indulgence. While it’s tempting to surrender to the array of festive treats and cozy comforts, maintaining your health and fitness is equally important. With a mindful approach, you can strike a balance between enjoying the holiday spirit and taking care of your well-being. Here’s your comprehensive guide on how to stay fit and healthy during the holiday season.

How to Stay Fit During the Holiday

Prioritize Physical Activity:

Maintaining a regular exercise routine is key to staying fit during the holidays. Find activities that you enjoy, whether it’s a brisk walk, a home workout, or a festive dance class. Schedule your workouts, and consider inviting friends or family to join you for added motivation. It does not have to be a long workout and you don’t have to go to the gym to stay fit and healthy. Find a form of exercise you like. For example, I always take my bike when I have to run errands. I like to walk in the evening when you can see all those beautiful Christmas lights.

Set Realistic Goals:

The holiday season may not be the time to embark on ambitious fitness goals, but that doesn’t mean you should abandon your healthy habits altogether. Set realistic and achievable goals that align with the festive season, such as maintaining your current fitness level, staying active at least three times a week, or trying a new winter sport. Maybe you want to lose weight, but you also like to enjoy your Christmas meal without worrying and feeling guilty. Set a goal that allows you to have fun on Christmas.

Mindful Eating:

While holiday feasts are a tradition, practicing mindful eating can help you enjoy the festivities without overindulging. Pay attention to portion sizes, savor each bite, and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Choose nutrient-dense foods and balance your plate with a variety of colorful fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.

Stay Hydrated:

Amidst the holiday cheer, it’s easy to forget about hydration. Make a conscious effort to drink enough water throughout the day. Staying hydrated not only supports your overall health but can also help control your appetite and prevent overeating during festive meals. And be careful about how much other drinks you consume. Some types of drinks contain a lot of sugar and calories. If your goal is to loose weight, maybe it is better to drink less of it or stay away from it all.

Choose Healthy Alternatives:

When it comes to holiday treats, consider healthier alternatives. Experiment with recipes that incorporate whole ingredients, reduce added sugars, and increase nutritional value. For example, opt for dark chocolate, nuts, and dried fruits as a festive snack instead of sugary sweets.

Plan and Prepare:

Anticipate challenging situations, such as holiday parties or family gatherings, and plan accordingly. Eat a balanced meal before attending an event to curb excessive snacking, and bring a healthy dish to share. Having nutritious options readily available can help you make mindful choices. If you go grocery shopping, opt for 80-90% healthy and 10-20% less healthy food. This way you get enough vitamins and minerals that you definitely need during the colder winter months.

Get Adequate Rest:

Amid the holiday hustle, prioritize sleep. Lack of sleep can impact your energy levels, mood, and overall well-being. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night, and establish a relaxing bedtime routine to ensure a restful night’s sleep. And remember that the quality of sleep is way more important than the quantity. Turn off your TV/phone/laptop an hour before you go to bed. The blue lights that come from those screens can influence the quality of your sleep. Read a book instead of have a good conversation with someone.

Manage Stress:

The holiday season can bring about stress, which may affect your physical and mental health. Stress has been proven to be one of the reasons you get sick faster. Incorporate stress-management techniques into your routine, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or a calming yoga practice. Taking time for self-care can help you navigate the season with greater ease.

The holiday season is a time to celebrate, and that includes celebrating your health. By making mindful choices, staying active, and finding a balance between indulgence and moderation, you can enjoy the festivities while maintaining your well-being. Remember, staying fit and healthy during the holidays is not about deprivation but about making choices that align with your overall health goals. Here’s to a season filled with joy, good health, and a hearty dose of holiday cheer!
