In today’s fast-paced digital world, everything is just a click away. We scroll endlessly, stream without limits, and store thousands of books, songs, and movies in tiny devices. But while convenience is at its peak, something else is quietly slipping away: joy. That’s where offline media comes in. Whether it’s flipping through a glossy magazine, putting a record on the turntable, popping in a DVD, or curling up with a paperback, physical media has a way of grounding us in the moment and creating a deeper, more meaningful connection.

The Magic of Tangibility

There’s something incredibly satisfying about holding a book in your hands, sliding a DVD into the player, or hearing the crackle of a vinyl record. Unlike digital files that vanish behind screens, physical media engages multiple senses: the smell of paper, the texture of glossy pages, the click of a DVD case closing. These small, tactile details add layers of experience that digital media can’t replicate. You actually own all of the music, books and movies you love.

A Break From Constant Connectivity

When you’re offline, there are no push notifications or endless distractions pulling you away. Reading a book, flipping through a magazine, or watching a DVD means you’re truly there immersed in the story or music, not half-scrolling and half-listening. Offline media allows for presence, focus, and the kind of enjoyment that feels rare in a world of multitasking. Since I started to spend more time offline, I started to love DVDs, CDs, magazines and reading again.

The Rituals That Bring Comfort

Playing a vinyl record, choosing a CD, or selecting a DVD from your shelf isn’t just about consuming content—it’s about ritual. It slows you down, makes you more intentional, and turns the act into an experience. Movie nights feel special when you pick a DVD, maybe watch the bloopers or behind-the-scenes, and commit to enjoying the film without distractions. The same goes for lighting a candle while reading a magazine or setting the needle on your favorite record. These rituals turn ordinary moments into cozy, meaningful ones.

Nostalgia and Connection

Offline media carries with it a sense of nostalgia. Old magazines capture a snapshot of culture, vinyl records remind us of eras gone by, DVDs bring back the excitement of owning your favorite movie, and books become lifelong companions on our shelves. Owning physical copies connects us not only to the past but also to the joy of collecting and cherishing something tangible.

Final Thoughts

In a digital world, joy often comes from slowing down, unplugging, and savoring something real. Offline media offers that joy. It’s not about rejecting technology but about finding balance—choosing moments where you can disconnect and immerse yourself in the simple pleasure of a book, a magazine, a DVD, or a record.

So next time you’re overwhelmed by endless scrolling, try reaching for something offline. You might just find that joy lives between the pages, within the grooves, or inside the shiny disc waiting for you on the shelf.

The post Why Physical Media Brings More Joy in a Digital World first appeared on Bettie Toon.

The post Why Physical Media Brings More Joy in a Digital World first appeared on Bettie Toon.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably spent way too many hours scrolling TikTok, getting lost in the Pinterest black hole, or binge-watching videos on YouTube. Don’t get me wrong—I love all those things (especially Pinterest; it’s my happy place ), but recently, I realized that I’m living way more online than in real life. And honestly? It’s exhausting.

So, I’ve been trying to find a balance and spend less time glued to my screen. Spoiler alert: it’s not easy, but it’s SO worth it. Here’s what’s been working for me:

How to Spend Less Time Online

1. Create a Cute Offline Routine

I started by building an offline routine that feels as fun and aesthetic as my online life. Think:

Waking up early enough to have a slow, cozy morning (Tea + journaling = chef’s kiss).

Picking out a cute outfit and actually putting it on, even if I’m just staying home.

Taking walks to get fresh air and clear my mind—nature is the ultimate vibe.

I also started using CDs again because this way I don’t have to use Spotify all the time.

When your offline life feels good, you’re less tempted to escape into the digital world.

2. Set “No-Screen” Zones

I’ve banned screens from my bed. It was hard at first because, hello, scrolling TikTok at 11 PM is not so great for my sleep routine. So now I turn off all of the screens two hours before I go to sleep. Instead, I mostly read books, but sometimes I want to journal before bed time. But I make sure I don’t use any screens in my bedroom.

3. Find Hobbies That Don’t Involve Wi-Fi

Remember hobbies? I recently picked up my ukulele again (it was collecting dust, oops) and started playing around with it. I also got back into reading and making mood boards in real life. It’s been such a nice break from staring at a screen. I really love reading before bedtime. But last Sunday, I just decided to read all day long and I wasn’t even missing my phone at all. I was just enjoying my offline. Fun thing is that it felt like I had more hours in a day.

4. Time Limits = Lifesaver

I use the screen time setting on my phone to remind me when I’ve been on apps for too long. It’s like having a mini accountability buddy in my pocket. Some days I ignore it (oops), but most of the time, it helps me snap out of my scrolling spiral. Sometimes I allow myself to spend 20 minutes on social and I stick to it. I have now a better relationship with social media and I just feel better in general.

5. Romanticize Being Offline

This one’s my favorite. I try to make my offline time feel special. I light candles, put on soft music, and spend time doing little things that make me happy—like journaling, organizing my space, or even just sipping tea by the window. Or I just decide to read all day. Or I just go out for a walk and enjoy being outside, maybe get some fresh flowers.

6. Reward Yourself

Lastly, I make deals with myself. If I stay off my phone for an hour, I’ll treat myself to a face mask or a yummy snack. It’s like gamifying my offline time, and it totally works. But I think once you go offline more often, you will realize it is actually nice to be offline. And I think that feeling more relaxed without your screen is already a reward itself.

The result?

I still have a long way to go, but I’m already feeling more present and less overwhelmed. Plus, I’ve noticed that I actually enjoy my online time more when I’m not on my phone 24/7.

If you’re thinking about spending less time online, I’d say go for it! Start small and focus on what feels good to you.

Let me know if you have any tips—I’m always looking for new ideas!

xo,

These days we use internet for everything. We use it for school, work and our personal lives. Internet and social media have a lot of benefits, but it can also make you feel overwhelmed. It is important to take breaks from the internet and your social media every now and then. But how to spend less time online when it feels you use it for everything? Today, I give you tips on how to spend less time online. This will give you more balance in your life and you will probably feel more relaxed.

Why ou should spend less time online

blabla

How To Spend Less Time Online

Set Goals
First you have to know how much time you spend online. You can easily check this on your phone and if not, you can download an app that tracks your activity. Be ready for some shocking statics. One time, I downloaded an app like that and I was shocked by the numbers, how often I opened my phone just to check if I had any messages. And on some days I spend hours on my phone. When you know how much time you spend on your phone/laptop, you can set goals for yourself. When you can use your phone and much time you want to spend on your phone.

Digital Detox Days
There is also a more extreme way to detox and that is to have digital detox days. When you have days off, maybe on the weekend you can decide to put your phone away completely and ignore it the whole weekend. This can be very challenging. But it is also very beneficial. I have done this one time and suddenly realized how much time I spent on my phone and how many things I can get done if I am not looking at my phone. So a digital detox can be helpful for those who have a very long to-do list or when you just want to read a book for a change. But it does not have to be a whole weekend. When you come home from work or school, you can also do a digital detox in the evening.

Prioritize Offline Interactions
Being online and having social media has a lot of benefits. You can easily message your friends, show them what you are doing by sharing a photo and you can make new friends easily. But real-life interactions are still way more important. This will help you with your communication skills. It is also easier to see how the other person is really feeling, because you can read their faces. Real-life interactions gives you a good feeling. It feels good to spend time with someone in real-life. You all miss that when you always talk to your friends through your phone.

Limit Social Media use
Recently on television there was a segment about spending a lot of time online. The people they interviewed admitted they spend over 5 hours a day on social media. This is for personal use only, unless you have a job in social media. But most people can limit the time they spend on social media. Say to yourself that instead of 5 hours you give yourself 1 hour. I try to give myself 30 minutes a day on social media. When you limit your time on social media, you will have more time for other things.

Offline hobbies
The other day I was thinking that the things I like to do are offline. I like to write content for my blogs, I like to create social media content and I like to write for fun. But I realized I only have one offline hobbie: reading. When I try to reduce the time I spend on my phone, I suddenly realize I don’t have offline hobbies. If you are going to do a digital detox or just reduce your social media time, make sure you have something to do otherwise you will get bored. Play a game with friends, go to the cinema, go shopping (not online), exercise or just be creative and paint something.

Mindfulness
Work on yourself, start exercising and start working on your mental health. Start meditating and become more confident. The better you feel, the better choices you make. When you feel poor, you just want to lay on your couch, watching tv and scrolling on your phone. When you feel energetic and excited you make different choices. Find ways to reduce your stress, read books on how to improve your mental health and just go out for a long walk in the evening.

Photo by Thought Catalog on Unsplash
