If you’re familiar with getting your period, you know how painful and frustrating it can be. The cramps can make you want to stay in bed all day, wrapped in a blanket, eating chocolate.

But there are actually several ways to help yourself feel better during your period. Over the years, I’ve tried different things, and I’ve found a few tips that really work for me.

In this post, I’m going to share some simple and realistic ways to reduce cramps, feel more comfortable, and take better care of yourself during your period.

How to Feel Better on Your Period (Easy Tips for Cramps & Self-Care)

Hot water bottle
I’m starting with my favorite tip. As soon as I notice the first cramps, I try to pause whatever I’m doing (if possible) and make a hot water bottle. Then I place it on my lower back and relax, usually by watching an episode of something on Netflix. This is my go-to trick. My cramps can get very intense, but as soon as I use a hot water bottle and give myself time to relax, the pain often eases almost immediately. After an hour, or sometimes longer, I feel so much better. For the rest of my period, I’m usually almost pain-free.

Drink chamomile tea
Warm drinks are already helpful for cramps, but chamomile tea has extra benefits. Chamomile is known for its calming and relaxing properties, which can help reduce tension and discomfort. Try drinking one or two cups in the days leading up to your period and during it.

Eat healthy
Eating well can make a big difference. Many women notice fewer or less painful cramps when they maintain a healthy diet. Your body needs extra nutrients during your period, so focus on foods rich in iron (like meat, lentils, and beans) and magnesium (like leafy greens and nuts). These can help support your body and reduce symptoms.

Gentle movement
If your cramps aren’t too severe, gentle movement can help. A short walk, for example, can improve blood circulation, boost your mood, and reduce stress. You don’t have to do intense workouts—just light movement is enough.

Rest
We often have busy lives and forget to listen to our bodies. During your period, your body may need more rest than usual. Don’t feel guilty about taking a nap or relaxing with a show. Pushing yourself too hard can actually make cramps worse.

Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water is important. Staying hydrated can help reduce bloating and may ease cramps. Try to drink water consistently throughout the day.

Extra tip: try magnesium or a warm shower
Magnesium (through food or supplements) can help relax muscles and reduce cramps. A warm shower or bath can also have a similar soothing effect, especially if you let the warm water relax your lower back and stomach.

We live in a world that often expects us to be “on” all the time—productive, upbeat, and efficient, no matter what’s going on inside our bodies. But your period is not just a physical event—it’s a natural signal from your body asking you to rest, reset, and restore. Slowing down during your menstrual cycle isn’t a weakness or an excuse. It’s an act of self-respect.

Even if you have school, work, or a busy life, it’s possible to create more softness and care during your period—and your body will thank you for it.

Why You Should Slow Down During Your Period

1. Your Body Is Literally Working Overtime

During your period, your body is shedding your uterine lining, balancing hormones, and repairing itself. That’s energy being used behind the scenes. It’s okay if you feel more tired or emotional—your body is doing a lot, even if you’re just sitting still.

2. You’re More Prone to Stress and Overwhelm

Hormone fluctuations (especially the drop in estrogen and progesterone) can make you feel more sensitive or irritable. Pushing yourself too hard during this time can lead to burnout or emotional crashes. Slowing down helps regulate your mood and protect your peace.

3. Rest Supports Hormonal Balance

Chronic stress and lack of rest can actually make period symptoms worse—think heavier bleeding, more cramps, and worse PMS. Giving yourself permission to slow down helps your nervous system relax and your hormones regulate naturally.

4. You Deserve to Feel Good in Your Body

Your period is a reminder to treat your body with love, not to punish it for being slower or more emotional. Slowing down can help you reconnect with your needs and meet yourself with compassion instead of criticism.

5. It Builds a Healthier Relationship With Productivity

When you honor your body’s rhythms—like resting more during your period—you’re no longer stuck in the cycle of guilt and burnout. You learn that rest is productive too, and that there’s strength in listening to your body.

Simple Ways To Slow Down (even with work/school)

Slowing down doesn’t mean canceling your whole life. It means being more gentle with yourself where you can.

Here are a few ideas:

☕ Before or After Work/School

Take 10 minutes in the morning to sip tea in silence instead of scrolling.

Light a candle and stretch gently before bed.

Say no to non-essential plans. Rest is a valid reason.

💼 While at Work or School

Keep a cozy sweater, hot water bottle, or calming essential oil with you.

Take mindful breaks—step outside, breathe deeply, or journal for a few minutes.

Eat warm, nourishing food (think soup, oatmeal, or herbal tea).

🏠 After Hours or on the Weekend

Watch comfort shows or read slow, cozy books.

Do a simple self-care ritual: skincare, bath, journaling, or a heating pad + Netflix combo.

Take a nap—yes, really. Naps are not lazy.

✨ Final Thoughts

You don’t have to prove anything when you’re on your period. Your worth isn’t measured by how much you can push through. Slowing down is an act of softness, strength, and self-care—and the more you honor your cycle, the better your body will feel over time.

Let your period be a reminder to pause. Even small changes can make a big difference.
