A Merry Little Ex-Mas

Kate and Everett are getting a divorce, although they don’t call it that, they call it a conscious uncoupling. In the week before Christmas, Kate finds out that Everett is already dating someone new. Suddenly, he actually has time for his children and Christmas activities, whereas he used to be at work all the time. This whole situation creates tension, and then Chet shows up and he’s very interested in Kate.

I was looking forward to this exact moment: the first new Christmas movie on Netflix. And the cast is amazing! We have Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) and Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina), who were my favorites growing up. So, I definitely had high expectations.

This movie was a mix of weirdness and fun, I guess? Some things were a bit strange, but let’s focus on what I actually liked. I loved seeing my favorite actresses, Melissa and Alicia, again, that was already a bonus. Although Melissa’s role is very small, Alicia plays Kate, one of the main characters. She’s kind of jealous that her soon-to-be ex-husband has already found a new girlfriend. I could definitely see the chemistry between Kate and Everett.

The story was nice, though it kind of reminded me of a Hallmark movie. It was like a mix of a Hallmark Christmas movie and a slightly more polished Christmas movie, if that makes sense. I enjoy Hallmark movies sometimes, but let’s be honest — most of them are a bit weird and always follow the same story. They often give off low-budget vibes, but I think this one was a little better than that. Plus, there were a few genuinely beautiful moments.

The reason I didn’t love the movie was because of the weirdness Nigel and Chet brought. Nigel is English, so he must be a Harry Potter fan, but that was a little too much for me. And Chet was a bit odd too. Honestly, it didn’t make sense that Kate would actually date him.

So overall, it was just an okay movie for me. I’m not sure if I’d watch it again. Most Netflix Christmas movies are a miss, I mean, I’ll still watch them and kind of enjoy them, but I wouldn’t watch them twice. That said, I did like Holidate, Love Hard, and maybe one or two others. I’m just hoping they release one really good Christmas movie that I can watch over and over again.

The Wrong Paris

Dawn has been accepted into an art school in Paris, France, but there’s one problem: she can’t afford it. Her sisters convince her to audition for the reality dating show The Honey Pot, where a group of women compete to win one bachelor’s heart and find their happy ending. Dawn’s plan is simple: join the show, collect the money you get for participating, and leave as quickly as possible so she can attend art school. But there are two problems. First, she’s not in Paris, France, they’re actually filming in Paris, Texas. And second, the bachelor turns out to be the perfect man, and he really likes Dawn… and he’s not willing to let her go.

Review

I was so excited to see Miranda Cosgrove in a movie again. It’s been a while since I last saw her in one. I used to watch iCarly all the time when I was younger. I know she’s been in quite a few movies and shows over the past couple of years, but I haven’t watched those. And since I always love a good cheesy romcom, I was super excited to watch this one.

The characters were fun. The other women competing were a bit over the top, and they each represented different stereotypes: the tough girl, the mean girl, the flirty girl. But that’s what made it so entertaining. At times, it was pure chaos and I loved it.

The setting was gorgeous too. Sure, Paris, France is beautiful (and I love that city), but if you know me, you probably know I have a thing for cowboys, hot cowboys. So this was the perfect mix for me, which definitely added bonus points. And of course, this is the perfect movie for people who love watching dating reality shows like The Bachelor. I don’t watch regular television anymore, but now I’m honestly curious if The Bachelor is just as crazy as this movie. Probably not.

As for the story itself, this is where it gets tricky to explain. The movie was kind of weird and even a little bad… but at the same time, I loved it. You know how some cringey movies are so bad they’re hard to watch? This one was a little cringe, but in the best way, but still so much fun. I laughed several times, the wild characters were fun to watch, and there were some genuinely funny jokes.

This is the perfect movie for when you just want to have a good time. Don’t expect anything outstanding or award-worthy—just watch it with an open mind and enjoy it for what it is. I really had a great time watching, and it’s been a while since a movie actually made me laugh out loud. This genre is exactly what I love—cheesy (maybe even a little terrible) romcoms. I need more movies like this, and honestly, I think I’ll rewatch it in the future.
