The Last Letter

Ella is a single mother of twins. Her brother died in the army, and her daughter, Maisie, is battling cancer. She also believes that Chaos, the man she wrote letters to, has died. One day, Beckett shows up and tells Ella that her brother, Ryan, wanted him to help her. What Ella doesn’t know is that Beckett’s call sign is Chaos. He decides to keep this a secret until Maisie gets better, believing that if Ella knew the truth, she wouldn’t want him there.

Review

I’m in a book club, and I asked for a book recommendation. At that moment, I was in the mood for something sad, something that would break my heart and make me cry. One of the members told me The Last Letter was a sad book, so I decided to give it a try. I already knew Rebecca Yarros from the Fourth Wing series.

The story takes place in Telluride, where there’s a cozy B&B surrounded by nature. It reminded me of a vacation I once took in the middle of nowhere, where I was surrounded by trees and barely any people. I loved it. I could run around, play, and just have fun with my brother.

The characters were likable, although I’m still not sure why Beckett didn’t want to tell Ella who he really was. I mean, he explained his reasons, but I think Ella would have understood why he stopped writing back, his best friend died. Still, Ella was lucky to find a man who would always show up for her. He loved her children, Colt and Maisie, and they loved him, along with his dog, Havoc.

As I mentioned, I wanted to read a sad book, and it definitely was. Ryan’s death and Maisie’s battle with cancer made the story feel heavy. But it didn’t make me cry, at least not at first. When I had about 10–15% of the book left, I honestly thought it wouldn’t make me cry. And then the last few pages happened, and they completely destroyed me. It was awful. I was sobbing and had to stop several times because it was just too much. The ending of this book broke me.

This book was incredible. If a story can make you cry like that, you know it’s a good one. Yes, it was intense, but it was so, so good. It broke my heart, and I’m sure I’ll remember it for a very long time. It truly made an impact on me. If you’re ever in the mood for a good cry, read this one. This book, especially the ending, will most likely break your heart. It’s a beautifully tragic story.

Fourth Wing

Violet wanted to be a scribe, but her mother pushed her to become a rider. Becoming a rider isn’t easy; most cadets die before they make it that far. For Violet, survival will be even harder, as there are several people who want her dead for various reasons. It doesn’t help that she’s the smallest and weakest of them all. Dragons don’t bond with “fragile” humans—they incinerate them.

Xaden is one of the people who wants Violet dead, driven by a desire for revenge because her mother was responsible for his family’s death. But one thing could save Violet’s life: her intelligence. She’s likely the smartest in the quadrant, and she can use that to survive.

Review

This year, I’ve been reading a lot of romance novels—probably 99% of the books I’ve read so far fall into that genre. But in the past few weeks, I realized I wanted to explore something different. I reached out on social media for book recommendations, and many people suggested Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I decided to give it a try, even though a voice in my head kept saying I wouldn’t like it. That voice couldn’t have been more wrong—I ended up loving this book.

This year, I’ve been trying to embrace new experiences, and that includes exploring different genres. Romance is fun, but it can start to feel repetitive. Fourth Wing was a bit predictable at times, but the ending took me by surprise, which I loved.

I think I chose the right fantasy book to start with because Fourth Wing was so easy to read and incredibly entertaining. I was hooked from the beginning and couldn’t put it down. Even when I wasn’t reading, I found myself thinking about it, wondering what would happen next. This book made me feel everything from anger to sadness, which is why I gave it a full 5 out of 5 stars. You know a book is great when it makes you feel deeply. I enjoyed every second of it; it never felt boring, and there was always something happening.

I really liked the main character and found myself rooting for her, especially since I always cheer for the underdog. I loved her chemistry with Xaden, even when they were supposed to dislike each other at first. But my favorite parts of the book were the interactions with her dragon, Tairn. Their conversations had me laughing out loud, especially since Tairn is such a grump. He’s a fantastic character and one of the most powerful dragons.

Now, I’m asking myself why I never branched out from romance before. It feels like I was missing out on something wonderful. The good news is, that I can now expand my TBR list—I have a feeling I’ll enjoy A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas too.

And of course, I did a bit of research and found out there will be an Amazon Prime adaptation. I really hope they do it justice because book-to-screen adaptations can be hit or miss. But for now, I’m just excited that there’s going to be a show based on this book! And I am definitely excited to read the other books in this series. Hopefully they will be just as good as this one.

The post Fourth Wing – Rebecca Yarros | Book Review first appeared on Bettie Toon.

The post Fourth Wing – Rebecca Yarros | Book Review first appeared on Bettie Toon.
