If you’re familiar with getting your period, you know how painful and frustrating it can be. The cramps can make you want to stay in bed all day, wrapped in a blanket, eating chocolate.

But there are actually several ways to help yourself feel better during your period. Over the years, I’ve tried different things, and I’ve found a few tips that really work for me.

In this post, I’m going to share some simple and realistic ways to reduce cramps, feel more comfortable, and take better care of yourself during your period.

How to Feel Better on Your Period (Easy Tips for Cramps & Self-Care)

Hot water bottle
I’m starting with my favorite tip. As soon as I notice the first cramps, I try to pause whatever I’m doing (if possible) and make a hot water bottle. Then I place it on my lower back and relax, usually by watching an episode of something on Netflix. This is my go-to trick. My cramps can get very intense, but as soon as I use a hot water bottle and give myself time to relax, the pain often eases almost immediately. After an hour, or sometimes longer, I feel so much better. For the rest of my period, I’m usually almost pain-free.

Drink chamomile tea
Warm drinks are already helpful for cramps, but chamomile tea has extra benefits. Chamomile is known for its calming and relaxing properties, which can help reduce tension and discomfort. Try drinking one or two cups in the days leading up to your period and during it.

Eat healthy
Eating well can make a big difference. Many women notice fewer or less painful cramps when they maintain a healthy diet. Your body needs extra nutrients during your period, so focus on foods rich in iron (like meat, lentils, and beans) and magnesium (like leafy greens and nuts). These can help support your body and reduce symptoms.

Gentle movement
If your cramps aren’t too severe, gentle movement can help. A short walk, for example, can improve blood circulation, boost your mood, and reduce stress. You don’t have to do intense workouts—just light movement is enough.

Rest
We often have busy lives and forget to listen to our bodies. During your period, your body may need more rest than usual. Don’t feel guilty about taking a nap or relaxing with a show. Pushing yourself too hard can actually make cramps worse.

Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water is important. Staying hydrated can help reduce bloating and may ease cramps. Try to drink water consistently throughout the day.

Extra tip: try magnesium or a warm shower
Magnesium (through food or supplements) can help relax muscles and reduce cramps. A warm shower or bath can also have a similar soothing effect, especially if you let the warm water relax your lower back and stomach.

There was a time online when everyone was forcing positivity. It was seen as a bad thing if you had negative thoughts or feelings, and if you did have them, you were expected to force yourself to think positive thoughts.

Luckily, I don’t see this as often anymore, or maybe my feed has simply stopped showing those people. Because I disagree with that mindset. It is not always healthy to force positive thoughts when you feel the exact opposite.

So if you ever feel like you always have to be positive, this blog is for you. I am going to give you a few reasons why it is completely okay to have negative emotions and thoughts.

Reasons why It is Okay To Have Negative Emotions

It is a part of life
Just like positive emotions, negative emotions are a natural part of our lives. It is completely normal to experience negative thoughts and feelings. Yes, too many negative thoughts can be destructive, but a normal amount of negative emotions is completely normal. Don’t beat yourself up if you have those feelings. Just feel them, experience them, and eventually let them go.

It is unhealthy to suppress them
When you think you have to be positive all the time and force yourself to think happy thoughts while ignoring your negative emotions, you are suppressing them. That is not very healthy. In the last couple of years, I have heard many times that suppressing emotions for too long can actually make you feel worse mentally and physically. It is much healthier to feel those emotions, process them for a while, and allow yourself the time to work through them. Eventually, the feeling will fade.

Negative emotions are functional
Negative emotions can actually help you deal with certain situations and process them. For example, if someone dies, you feel sad. Feeling that sadness helps you grieve and process the loss. Think about another situation where you felt sad and cried. After crying for a while, you often feel a little better. Negative emotions can also help you figure out what you don’t want in life, which can make it easier to discover what you do want.

You don’t have to fake perfection
I sometimes feel like people who promote toxic positivity are not showing their true selves. You don’t have to suppress your feelings to look perfect, whether online or in real life. Everyone experiences both positive and negative emotions. Nobody is perfect, so you don’t have to pretend to be positive all the time just to appear that way.

They can signal that something needs to change
Negative emotions can also act as signals. Feeling frustrated, unhappy, or drained might be your mind telling you that something in your life needs attention. Maybe you need more rest, healthier boundaries, or a change in your environment. Listening to those feelings can help you make better decisions for yourself.

They help you grow as a person
Difficult emotions often teach us important lessons. They can help us develop empathy, resilience, and a deeper understanding of ourselves. Many people grow the most during the challenging moments in their lives.

We live in a society where we are expected to have a successful career, a family, a social life, and so much more. Even on our days off or during the weekend, our schedules are often completely full. Of course, life can get busy sometimes, and there will always be weeks that are more demanding than others. But when you keep going without slowing down, you may forget to pause, rest, and take a deep breath. Eventually, your body and mind will start to signal that something is wrong. Feeling unwell can be the first sign that it’s time to stop and take care of yourself. These are the signs of mental exhaustion that you shouldn’t ignore.

Signs You Are Mentally Exhausted

You overthink a lot: You can’t stop overanalyzing everything, and you constantly worry about the past or the future.

Trouble focusing: When you are mentally exhausted, you have trouble focusing on one task at a time. It can even be hard to focus on conversations with your friends.

Forgetting things: Forgetting something once in a while isn’t unusual; it can happen to anyone. But if you notice that you are forgetting more and more things, it might be a sign that you need to slow down.

No motivation: You don’t feel like doing anything at all. And even if you try to do something, it can be very hard to actually get things done.

You feel tired: This one is obvious, but you may still feel tired or exhausted even after a full night of sleep.

Tension in your body: Your muscles feel tight and you may notice tension in your body, most commonly in your neck and shoulders.

Low energy: You never seem to have the energy to do anything. Even getting ready for the day can feel like a big effort.

Change in appetite: Some people start eating more when they feel stressed, while others eat less. If your appetite suddenly changes, it might be a sign.

Hard to fall asleep: You feel tired but can’t seem to fall asleep, no matter what you try.

Irritability: If you have been feeling more irritated or frustrated lately, it can also be a sign that you need to slow down and take some time for yourself.

Feeling overwhelmed: Your to-do list suddenly feels overwhelming, and even day-to-day life can feel like too much.

Procrastination: You feel overwhelmed and tired, so you postpone things. The next day you feel the same way and put them off again.

Not taking care of yourself: Whether it’s eating mostly junk food, neglecting hygiene, or not brushing your hair—these can all be signs.

Things You Can Do When You Are Feeling Mentally Exhausted

Slow down: Look at your to-do list and ask yourself if you really have to do all those things. If you want to start feeling better, you may need to do less and slow down.

Take care of yourself: Eat healthy, get enough sleep, and move your body. These are the things that will help you in the long run. It’s not always easy, but you will start to feel better.

Stop doomscrolling: One reason we often feel overwhelmed is because we are on our phones all the time. Try reducing your screen time and use those hours for better and healthier things.

Start doing (small) things for yourself: What makes you happy? Life isn’t only about working all the time or doing what other people or society expect from you. You should also do what truly makes you happy.

A long time ago, I was doing an internship, and there was someone there who introduced me to drinking hot water. Every day, we had a coffee/tea break together, and while I was drinking tea, another woman would always drink hot water. One day, I asked her why, and she explained that drinking hot water had a lot of benefits. Of course, I had to try it! Honestly, I ended up liking it more than cold water, and now I actually prefer drinking hot water over cold, even in the summer. And today I am sharing those benefits of drinking hot water with you.

The Benefits of Drinking Hot Water

Supports Digestion: Warm water can help stimulate digestion by encouraging blood flow to the digestive organs. It may help your body break down food more efficiently and reduce feelings of bloating or heaviness.

Helps Relieve Constipation: Drinking hot water can help soften stools and encourage regular bowel movements, especially when consumed in the morning.

Promotes Relaxation: Warm water has a calming effect on the nervous system. It can help your body relax and may reduce tension or stress, especially when enjoyed slowly.

May Improve Circulation: Warm water helps dilate blood vessels, which can support better circulation and reduce stiffness in the body.

Helps With Detox Processes: Water supports the body’s natural detox systems. Drinking warm water may help stimulate sweating and urination, assisting the body in eliminating waste.

Soothes the Throat: Hot or warm water can feel soothing for a dry or irritated throat, especially during colder months or when you’re feeling under the weather.

May Reduce Bloating: Warm water can help relax the digestive tract, making it easier for gas to move through the system and reducing bloating.

Supports Morning Hydration: Starting your day with warm water gently rehydrates your body after sleep without overwhelming your system.

Can Help With Menstrual Discomfort: Warm water may help relax muscles and reduce cramps by improving blood flow.

Eases Nasal Congestion: Steam from hot water can help loosen mucus and soothe a stuffy nose.

May Support Weight Management: Warm water can slightly boost metabolism and may help you feel full before meals.

Encourages Mindful Drinking: Sipping warm water slowly invites mindfulness — you notice the taste, temperature, and the act of drinking itself.

Supports Hydration During Cold Weather: Cold water can feel shocking in winter, while warm water keeps you hydrated comfortably.

Calms an Upset Stomach: Warm water can relax the muscles of the digestive tract, helping reduce nausea or mild stomach discomfort.

Boosts Energy Gently: Unlike caffeine, warm water can refresh your system subtly by aiding circulation and hydration.

Improves Skin Health: Hydration from warm water supports circulation and can help maintain skin elasticity and a healthy glow.

Reduces Stress Hormones: The warmth signals your body to relax, which may help lower cortisol levels and promote calm.

Supports Oral Health: Warm water can help wash away bacteria gently, especially when paired with morning routines like brushing.

The reason I am writing this blog post is because a couple of days ago I realized I wasn’t drinking enough water. Even worse, I was barely drinking at all. During the winter months, I definitely struggle more with my water intake. But even in colder months, it is still very important to drink enough water.

Water plays a huge role in our bodies, and even mild dehydration can cause a lot of vague and easily overlooked symptoms. These are the signs of dehydration you shouldn’t ignore.

How Much Water Do You Reall

There isn’t one perfect amount of water that works for everyone. How much you need depends on factors like your body, activity level, diet, climate, and overall health. A common guideline is around 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day, but some people may need more, especially if they exercise, sweat a lot, or drink caffeine regularly.

Instead of focusing only on numbers, it’s helpful to listen to your body and drink consistently throughout the day. Waiting until you feel very thirsty often means you’re already mildly dehydrated.

Sign of Dehydration

Thirst: Feeling thirsty is the body’s most obvious signal that it needs fluids. If you’re frequently thirsty, your body may already be slightly dehydrated. However, some people don’t notice this symptom or don’t feel thirsty at all, which can make it harder to recognize when your body actually needs water.

Dry Mouth or Lips: A lack of saliva can make your mouth feel dry or sticky, which is often an early sign of dehydration.

Dark Yellow Urine: Urine color is a useful indicator. Dark yellow urine usually means your body needs more water, while light yellow suggests good hydration.

Fatigue or Low Energy: When you’re dehydrated, your blood volume decreases, making it harder for oxygen and nutrients to circulate efficiently. This can leave you feeling tired or sluggish. So the next time you’re feeling a bit low on energy, try drinking a glass of water to see if it helps.

Headaches: Dehydration can cause the brain to temporarily shrink due to fluid loss, which may trigger headaches. I used to get a lot of headaches when I was younger because I didn’t drink enough water. Your body is about 70% water, so it’s no surprise that you need enough water each day for your body to function properly.

Dizziness or Lightheadedness: Low fluid levels can affect blood pressure, leading to dizziness, especially when standing up quickly.

Dry Skin: Dehydration can reduce skin elasticity, making your skin feel dry and less supple. So if you want that glowy, healthy, well-hydrated skin, drinking enough water is essential. It’s beauty hack number one.

Difficulty Concentrating: Even mild dehydration can affect your focus, memory, and mental clarity. If you have to study or work for a few hours, make sure to keep a water bottle on your desk so you can take a few sips throughout the day.

Muscle Cramps: A lack of fluids and electrolytes can cause muscles to cramp or feel tight. So if you are feeling a bit stiff or have more cramps than usual, then drink more water.

Constipation: Water helps keep digestion moving. Without enough fluids, stools can become hard and difficult to pass.

In the last couple of years, I found out how important a good night of sleep is and then how much influence your evening routine has on your sleep quality. I was struggling with insomnia and barely slept. Then I stopped watching Netflix before bed and I started reading and suddenly I was feeling pretty good. I woke up feeling energetic again. In this blog post I am talking about why a relaxing evening is so important and then I give you a couple of ideas you can do during your evening routine

Why a Relaxing Evening Routine Helps

A consistent evening routine helps your body and mind transition from the busy energy of the day to a calmer state at night. When your nervous system knows what to expect, sleep comes more naturally, and racing thoughts quiet down. Over time, these nighttime habits can reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and create a gentle, grounded end to your day.

Nighttime Habits for a Relaxing Evening Routine

Change Into Comfy Clothes

The moment you slip into soft, cozy clothes, your body recognizes that the day is over. Comfy clothes are an instant cue for relaxation and comfort. If you do this for a while, your brain will notice it and then knows it is time to relax and to go to bed.

Stretch and Release Tension

Gentle stretching helps release tight muscles and improve circulation. Focus on slow, mindful movements and deep breathing, no pressure, just release.

Enjoy a Light Snack or Warm Drink

If you’re slightly hungry, a small snack or a warm cup of tea can help you feel nourished and cozy without overstimulating your body before bed. Make sure that you drink tea without cafeïne. Cafeïne will keep you awake and that is exactly what you want to avoid.

Read to Quiet Your Mind

Reading helps shift attention away from work, social media, or lingering thoughts. Pick a book that’s calming or comforting, fiction, self-care, or even poetry works perfectly. For me, my thoughts stop annoying me as soon I start reading. And this way, I can easily read 100 books a year.

Meditate or Sit in Stillness

A few minutes of meditation or simply sitting in silence can calm your nervous system. Focus on your breath, the sensations in your body, or the quiet around you. And every time you notice a thought, don’t worry. It is normal when you start to get random thoughts during meditation. As soon as you notice the thought, you let it go and bring your attention back to your breathing.

Journal to Process the Day

Journaling allows you to release thoughts, emotions, and any lingering mental clutter. Don’t worry about perfect writing, just let your mind unload before sleep. There is no perfect way to journal. You can write about what is bothering, or you can even start writing what went well that day. The point of journaling is to let your thoughts go, so you will feel lighter.

We live in a world that never truly pauses. Even in quiet moments, our minds feel full. Full of thoughts, notifications, expectations, noise. Many of us feel tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix, overwhelmed by small things, or constantly on edge without knowing exactly why. This isn’t a personal failure, it’s a nervous system response. We are collectively overstimulated, and it’s shaping the way we think, feel, and move through life.

Below are some of the main reasons why so many of us feel this way.

Why We Are Collectively Overstimulated

Constant Digital Input

Our phones are often the first thing we see in the morning and the last thing we touch at night. Messages, news, social media, videos, emails, our brains are processing endless information without real breaks. Even when we’re “relaxing,” we’re still consuming. There is no natural pause anymore, and our nervous systems don’t get the chance to reset. And the thing is that it is not easy to reduce your screentime. All those social media apps are designed to keep you on the app. It is addictive.

Social Media and Comparison Culture

We are constantly exposed to other people’s lives, their routines, achievements, bodies, homes, productivity, and happiness. Even when we know it’s curated, our brains still compare. This creates pressure to keep up, do more, be more, and never fall behind. It’s exhausting to measure yourself against hundreds of lives every single day. Sometimes we forget that photo or video is just one moment of their lives. It is not the full picture.

Busy Schedules and Full Calendars

Being busy has become normal, even expected. Our days are packed with tasks, appointments, social plans, and responsibilities. We rarely leave space for nothing. Rest is often something we have to “earn,” instead of something we allow. When life is always scheduled, the nervous system stays in alert mode. And this is not just a thing we do on a workday. Even on the weekends we are super busy, because we have to go grocery shopping, go to the gym, spend time with our friends.

The Pressure to Always Be Productive

There’s an unspoken belief that we should always be improving, optimizing, and achieving. Even rest has turned into something we try to do “right.” This constant self-improvement mindset keeps our minds switched on and makes it difficult to truly relax without guilt. It is why I am not a big fan of the hustle culture. Sometimes I still see those kind of videos on my For You Page and it is always the same. In those videos they say we have to work harder, do more etc.

Lack of True Silence

Silence has become rare. There’s almost always background noise, music, podcasts, videos, conversations, traffic. Many of us feel uncomfortable in quiet moments because we’re not used to them anymore. But silence is where the nervous system recovers. Without it, overstimulation builds.

Emotional and Mental Load

We carry more than just our own lives. We absorb news, global issues, expectations, and other people’s emotions. Being constantly aware of everything happening in the world keeps our minds in a state of alertness. Our nervous systems were never meant to hold this much all the time. Negativity is a part of our lives. It is probably impossible to escape that. But we have to find a way to have more balance in our lives and how we deal with our emotions instead of surpressing them.

No Clear Boundaries Between Work and Rest

With phones and laptops always nearby, work and responsibility can follow us everywhere. Messages come in after hours, thoughts about tasks linger, and switching off feels difficult. When there’s no clear end to the day, the body never fully relaxes. I know someone who is always thinking about her job. And honestly, she is always feeling stressed. It is just not healthy. Everyone needs a healthy balance in their lives.

The post Why We Are Collectively Overstimulated first appeared on A happy life.

Having the flu can make the world feel heavy and slow. Your body aches, your energy disappears, and even the smallest tasks feel overwhelming. When you’re sick, the goal isn’t productivity or pushing through — it’s rest, comfort, and giving your body the space it needs to heal. Here are gentle ways to support yourself and feel a little better while your body does the hard work of recovery.

How to Feel Better When You’re Having the Flu

Let Yourself Rest (Without Guilt)

Rest is not optional when you have the flu, it’s essential. Your body is fighting something, and that takes energy. Let yourself sleep more than usual, lie down during the day, and cancel plans without apologizing. Healing happens faster when you stop resisting rest. The more you rest and sleep, the faster you will start feeling better again.

Hydrate Often, Even in Small Sips

When you’re sick, staying hydrated helps your body recover and prevents headaches and dizziness. Water, herbal tea, broth, or warm lemon water are all gentle options. If drinking feels difficult, take small sips throughout the day, it all adds up. Place a large water bottle next to your bottle or couch, so you don’t have to get up.

Eat What Feels Comforting and Easy

This isn’t the time to worry about perfect meals. Choose foods that are warm, simple, and easy to digest. Soup, toast, oatmeal, crackers, or fruit can be enough. Listen to your body, eat when you’re hungry, and don’t force it when you’re not. When you are sick, it is so important to listen to your body what it needs.

Create a Cozy Healing Space

Turn your bed or couch into a little recovery nest. Soft blankets, pillows, dim lighting, and calm music can make being sick feel less miserable. A cozy environment helps your nervous system relax, which supports healing. The cozier your bed or couch is, the easier it is for you to relax and let your body rest.

Lower the Pressure on Yourself

You don’t need to reply to messages, keep up with routines, or “stay on track.” Being sick is already enough. Let go of expectations and remind yourself that this phase is temporary. Doing nothing is sometimes exactly what you’re meant to do, especially when you are sick. You don’t have to look good when you’re sick, you don’t have to follow your strict diet, you don’t have to do anything at all.

Take Warm Showers or Baths (If You Have the Energy)

Warm water can soothe body aches, clear your head, and help you relax. Even a short shower can make you feel more human again. It can give you a little bit of extra energy again. Dry off, change into clean comfy clothes, and crawl back into bed. it can be surprisingly comforting.

Keep Your Mind Gentle and Quiet

Avoid overstimulation if you can. Too much scrolling, loud noise, or bright screens can make you feel worse. Try watching something familiar and calming, listening to an audiobook, or simply resting with your eyes closed. Let your mind heal along with your body.

Be Kind to Yourself

Being sick can be frustrating, especially if you’re used to being productive or busy. Remind yourself that your body isn’t failing you, it’s protecting you. Talk to yourself gently. Healing takes time, and you’re allowed to take it.

Winter has a way of slowing the world down. The days are shorter, the air is colder, and suddenly everything feels quieter. Instead of fighting that softness, winter becomes so much more magical when you lean into it and when you let the season guide you toward gentler routines, slower mornings, and habits that make life feel warm from the inside out. If you want this winter to feel calmer, cozier, and a little more meaningful, these habits are the perfect place to start.

Winter Habits That Make Life Nicer

Create a Slow Morning Ritual

Winter mornings hit differently. It is darker and the chill in the air, the urge to stay wrapped in blankets. Make it a ritual instead of a rush. Light a candle, drink something warm, open the curtains slowly, or read a few pages before touching your phone. A slow morning shapes your entire day.

Go Outside Every Day (Even for 10 Minutes)

Fresh air in winter feels crisp in the best way. A short walk, a few breaths on your balcony, or stepping outside with a warm drink can reset your mind instantly. It helps you feel less stuck inside and more connected to the season. And I know it sounds better to stay inside where it is nice and warm. But after a walk you will feel better. Just wear hats and gloves to keep yourself warm. Here in The Netherlands, we don’t get a lot of daylight during the winter, so I try to go outside during the day, especially when the sun is shining.

Romanticize Warm Drinks

Tea, hot chocolate, coffee, or whatever you love. Make it a ceremony: your favorite mug, slow sips, maybe a blanket or a playlist. It’s such a small thing, but it makes winter feel luxurious.

Keep Your Space Cozy and Tidy

You spend more time indoors during winter, so your space matters even more. Soft blankets, pillows warm lights, clean surfaces, and a little intentional tidying make your home feel like a retreat instead of a place you’re trapped in.

Read More (and Escape Into Stories)

Winter and reading go perfectly together. Getting lost in a book feels extra comforting when it’s cold outside. Choose books that feel warm, magical, or inspiring, whatever makes you want to curl up and stay awhile. It is nice to escape to a different world when it is cold outside. You can even read a summer romance, and you will feel like you’re on a vacation to a tropical island.

Practice Gentle Movement

Slow yoga, stretching, cozy pilates, or even a peaceful walk can work wonders for your mood in winter. You don’t need intense workouts, just movement that feels good and keeps your energy from dipping too low. Right now, I love to walk to the supermarket to get some groceries as my exercise. It takes an hour in total, but it feels nice to be outside and move my body.

Cook or Bake Something Simple

Warm meals make cold days feel safer. Try soup, roasted veggies, banana bread, or anything nostalgic. Cooking in winter feels grounding, like an act of care for your future self. But seriously, I am addiced to soup during the colder months. I think I could eat it several times a week. It is simple, delicious and warm.

Take Vitamin D (or Make Time for Sunlight)

Shorter days can affect your mood more than you realize. Getting sunlight when you can, or supplementing if needed, helps you feel more awake, balanced, and grounded through the season. Taking vitamin D is actually recommended if you live somewhere where the sun doesn’t shine often during the darker months. I take vitamin D as well, because the sun rarely shines.

Have Weekly “Offline Hours”

The darker months make scrolling even more tempting, but it also drains your energya lot. Choose an evening or a few hours each week to unplug completely. Read, journal, clean, play music, or rest. It feels like mental uncluttering. Just keep using your screens to a minimum. Your mental health will improve just after a few days.

Reflect More, Rush Less

Winter naturally invites you inward. Journaling, planning, dreaming, or simply sitting with your thoughts helps you reset emotionally. Use this season to connect with yourself, not pressure yourself. It’s the perfect time to make plans for the new year, reflect on yourself and your life. What has been working for you, and what do you want to do more often? Winter is the ideal season to reflect and set new goals.

As the year slowly winds down, there’s something beautiful about using the final stretch to reset your life and gently step into the best version of yourself. You don’t need a dramatic transformation or a strict “new year, new me” plan — small, meaningful habits can change everything. Here are the core habits to master before 2026 to feel healthier, calmer, happier, and more aligned with the life you want.

Master These Habits Before 2026

1. Prioritize Sleep and Rest

Sleep is the foundation of everything: your mood, skin, energy, focus, productivity, and even the way you talk to yourself. Make rest a non-negotiable part of your routine. I know it can be hard to go to bed early, especially on weekends, but I promise it will make a huge difference. You will feel like a different person.

Don’t forget to turn off your screens one or two hours before bedtime because using screens before bed can mess up your sleep. Create a cozy, calm evening routine that helps you fall asleep fast. For me, that means reading for one or two hours before bed.

2. Practice Self-Care — For Your Body and Your Mind

Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and face masks (though those help, too). It’s learning to support both your physical and mental wellbeing.

For your body:
• hydrate
• move your body
• nourish yourself
• stretch
• keep consistent routines

For your mind:
• take breaks
• set boundaries
• journal
• rest when you’re overwhelmed
• speak kindly to yourself

When you care for both your mind and body, you feel grounded, like you’re finally taking care of you.

3. Spend More Time Offline

We often don’t realize how much screens drain us until we step away. A few days ago, I heard on the news that Meta hid research on the link between social media and mental health, and the results were not good. People who spent a lot of time on Facebook and Instagram experienced depression symptoms, anxiety, and more. Then they spent one week without social media and they already felt much better. Social media is designed to keep us addicted, like zombies.

Try spending more of your free time offline: reading, journaling, going for walks, visiting cafés, tidying your space, or simply being present. You’ll start to feel calmer, more focused, and more connected to yourself.

4. Make Time for Fun Activities

You don’t have to be productive 24/7. Your life is allowed to be fun, cozy, and filled with small joys. Make time for activities that make you feel alive. Bake, draw, shop, craft, watch movies, learn something new, explore your city, or pick up a hobby you haven’t touched in years. Fun isn’t childish, it’s essential. Try planning one small thing each day just for fun.

5. Move Your Body Daily

We all know how important it is to move our bodies, yet we often forget. We prefer to lie on the couch and watch another episode and that’s fine sometimes. Rest is important too. But moving your body daily is even better.

This doesn’t mean you need to go to the gym every day. You don’t need to go to the gym at all. There are so many ways to move: go for a walk, turn on music and dance, stretch, or do some yoga. Movement doesn’t have to cost money, you can do it for free. Changing your habits is hard at first, but it’s worth it. You’ll feel better, more focused, and you’ll sleep better too.

6. Eat Foods That Make You Feel Good

Healthy eating isn’t about strict rules or perfection. It’s about choosing foods that give you energy and help you feel your best. And yes, it’s not always easy. The supermarket is 90% processed foods and maybe 10% unprocessed foods.

Try buying more fruits and vegetables. Make a list before you leave the house, and eat before you go grocery shopping if you shop while hungry, you’ll buy more unhealthy food. Find delicious recipes online. If you start eating healthier, you’ll notice the difference, especially if you’ve been eating a lot of junk food. You might even experience mild withdrawals in the beginning, but stick to your plan and you’ll feel better soon.

And don’t forget to cut back on unhealthy drinks like soda and sugary coffees. Drink more water and tea instead.
