Review
Icebreaker is the first book in The Maple Hills book series by Hannah Grace. I’ve seen so many people sharing this book on social media. It was hard to avoid it. So yes obviously I gave in and decided to read this book as well. However, I might need a break from books about Ice Hockey players (or any sport to be honest) because I have read so many books this year about sports.
The Ice Hockey players and the figure skaters are forced to share a rink because the ice rink for the hockey players got destroyed and it is going to take a while to rebuild it. I am honestly impressed by how you can destroy an ice rink that badly. The person who did it is smart and strong.
So the plot of this story is supposed to be like this: Anastacia and Aaron are figure skaters, Nathan is an ice hockey player and one day Aaron gets into an accident and Nathan offers himself to replace him. So that is what I was expecting. And sure, the plot is there. But the accident did not happen until I was 40% into the book!!! Look, it is good to start your story with a little bit of background story, explaining their relationships and all that. But it shouldn’t be too long. I was just waiting until the story really began. There is no story in the first 40% of this book. And yes, eventually Nathan replaces Aaron after the accident, but Nathan and Anastacia are on the ice just a few times. I was expecting a lot more. The plot that was promised was such a small portion of the book. The rest of the book was mostly smut.
Let’s talk about the main characters, because I have a lot to say, mostly about Anastacia. Because why is she never wearing underwear in public? It was just weird. Is she allergic to underwear? Another cringe moment between Nathan and Anastacia was the moment they sort of had sex in a car while their friends were also in the same car. That was just so weird.
But Nathan was weird as well, so I guess they make the perfect couple. But he literally said: I am going to put a baby in you. Why did he say that? I was grossed out by that.
There were also a lot of side characters, like many. And maybe this is just me because I constantly had trouble remembering everything. Because there weren’t just a lot of side characters but also a lot of information. I am not good with remembering names and all, so I had moments when I was just confused. But I remember Henry and that he is sort of the good guy. I liked him better than Nathan, to be honest.
Look, I don’t want to humiliate anyone and I definitely don’t want to be a mean girl. This is just my personal opinion. You might like this book. Every book has fans or haters. And this time I am in the haters group. But so far this is the worst book I´ve read this year. The only positive I can say is that the ending was the best part. There was a lot of drama involving Aaron.
Even though I did not like this book, I am still thinking about whether I should give the author another chance. I remember that I gave Emily Henry a lot of chances and eventually I read one book by her that I actually enjoyed. So who knows I will read another book by Hannah Grace soon again? We’ll see. For now, I have still many other books that I want to read first. And I am afraid I will get disappointed again.
