Betting On The Boy Next Door

Sami is living a double life. By day she is a nurse, by night she is the lead singer of a rock band. And she has only told her grandmother about this. Even her best friends and her roommates have no idea that she is playing a rockband. Then Josh moves in next door. Ruby, her roommate, is determined to play for a match-maker and thinks that Josh would be a great man for Sami. After just one date, she finds out that he is just like her ex. He’s from an Austin family whose money is so old, it’s dusty. She is not going to do that again. The thing is, Josh isn’t easy to shake, especially after he discovers my rock ‘n’ roll alter ego.

Review

I was pretty excited to read this. This is the first time I read a book by Melanie Jacobson. I like to read books by ‘new’ authors and maybe find an author I really like. This is also the first book in the ‘Betting on Love’ book series. I haven’t read the rest of the books, but I feel like it is going to be the same vibe. Ruby is playing for matchmaker and she is trying to find a cute man for every single roommate. Anyway, there are a few things I liked about this book and things that I didn’t like.

I like to start with the positive things. I liked the cover. It is pretty and pink which is always good. I liked that the main character knows what she wants and she is chasing her dreams. I also really liked the beginning. I couldn’t stop reading it. I wanted to find out if she would fall for Josh and if she could keep her secret a secret. It was hard for her to hide her secret identity. I also really liked the double POV. It is fun to read how he is head over heels in love with her and she isn’t (yet). If she only knew how he really felt. Another thing I liked was the balcony chat sessions. That was cute.

So yes, I liked the beginning the most of the book. I thought the beginning was very exciting and it was hard to put the book down. But, that feeling kind of disappeared when I kept on reading. For me, it got less exciting and suddenly I wasn’t eager to pick up the book again and read the last part of it. I am not sure why. Maybe I was waiting for something big to happen, like a huge fight between Josh and Sami. I mean, Sami ignored him sometimes, but there wasn’t a big fight. I was waiting for the big climax, but that never happened. Or maybe it was because this book didn’t make me feel things.

Sometimes I read books that make me feel things. Those books are my favorite books, even when they break my heart sometimes. I think it is incredible that an author can do that you with just a few words. This book didn’t make me cry, laugh, or break my heart. Now I think about it, I think this might be the biggest reason why I didn’t feel excited reading this book.

Overall, I am a little bit disappointed. My expectations weren’t super high or anything. I was just waiting for that big climax and I think I am just a little sad that this book didn’t make me feel things. I know there are still two books in this series, and I have a feeling a fourth book will be there as well in the future. There are four roommates and I am expecting each of them to get their own book and love story. But for now, I am going to read other books first, before I think about reading the other ones.
