They Both Die At The End
On September 5, a little after midnight, Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio both get the call. When you get the call from the death-cast it means you are going to die that day and there is no escape. The only thing you don’t get to know is where and how you are going to die. They meet each other on an app called Last Friends. They both go on a big adventure for the last time in their lives.
Review
I can not stop thinking about this book and I finished it a week ago or something. I wouldn’t say it was a five-star for me but I think it is pretty close to a five-star. I wanted to read this book years ago but I never did. But the reason why I did this time, is because I was done with romance novels for a second. I just wanted to read something else and beforehand I had a feeling that this book did not have a happy ending for some reason. I mean, it is obvious, right? This book is called ‘They both die at the End’. Of course, it isn’t going to be a happy cheesy romance novel.
Surprisingly this book did not make me cry. I cry a lot for the record. Everything can make me cry, but this book didn’t. But it was still sad obviously. The author did not lie. They really both die at the end. For some reason, you still have this hope they are going to survive somehow. Or is that just me? Anyway, I liked this book. Even though it was a little sad.
I am also extremely grateful for not living in that (fantasy) world. I mean, knowing when you are going to die is terrifying. I have no idea how I would respond to that call. Maybe I just decided to sleep all die. I think I am more Mateo. He is also a very anxious kid. He did not leave the house. And I totally understand. Rufus does not want to die but it feels like he already accepted it. Two different young boys who become best friends in less than a day.
The author mentioned somewhere in this book that this book is not about death, it is about life. I think I got that message. The death cast call people and suddenly the people who are dying suddenly open their eyes and decide to live their lives to the fullest. They do whatever they want to do. They start living on their last day on earth. We, in the real world, have no idea when we are going to die (unless we choose it), so that means we should always treat each day as if it is our last day. We should do what we want to do, not letting fear stop us.
Overall, this book was a page-turner. At first, I wasn’t sure if this was going to be the right book for me. First of all, it is a young adult. But I guess you will never be too old to read a young adult. Second, I thought this book was going to be very slow-paced because it is just about one day. But it did not feel slow-paced to me.
I really liked this book. It was an interesting plot and I just wanted to keep reading. I wanted to find out when they were going to die. I also liked the short chapters about the other people in this story. Some of them are Mateo and Rufus’s friends, but it’s also about other people who got their call and they are crossing paths with Mateo and Rufus at a certain point.
