Cowboy, it’s cold outside
Sheena was only 18 years old when someone killed her father, and since then she has been taking care of her sisters. Now all of her sisters are off to college and have left their small town. It’s finally time for Sheena to do what she wants. She even has a business idea: opening an axe-throwing bar.
Denver’s father wasn’t a good man, he ruined several lives, including Sheena’s. His father is now in prison, but Denver still feels responsible for helping everyone whose life was affected by him. So when Sheena comes to him with her business idea, he’s all in.
Review
I was so excited to read this. I love cowboys and I love Christmas, and those two combined sounded like the perfect book for me. It’s December, so obviously I wanted something with Christmas vibes.
This whole story takes place in the middle of nowhere. There isn’t a lot to do in this small town, and Sheena and Denver are trying to change that with their axe-throwing bar and event hall. They want to attract more people from the surrounding towns to Four Corners Ranch.
I liked Sheena. She took care of her sisters after their father was killed. Her sisters always came first, and she focused all her energy on that. But now she’s on her own, her sisters are working or studying elsewhere, and she finally wants to start living her own life. She’s also never had a relationship and only sleeps with people who are just passing through.
I liked Denver a lot less, for one specific reason. Yes, he also raised other people, which I admire. But I hated how he basically gaslit Sheena. At first, he acted like he wanted a relationship with her, and then suddenly he changed his mind and claimed he only wanted something casual. And he said it at the worst possible moment, right when Sheena opened her heart to him.
The story itself was okay. Two people with strong chemistry starting a business together sounded interesting. And they don’t give in right away, so there’s a lot of yearning, which I love. There’s definitely chemistry between Sheena and Denver whenever they’re together.
Honestly, I didn’t feel the Christmas vibes from this book. Which is fine, I still liked the story and the cowboy vibes, but I was hoping for more Christmas atmosphere. It is December after all. Now that I think about it, Sheena did decorate Denver’s living room with a Christmas tree and everything… so maybe it’s just me.
Overall, it was an okay read. I think it’s more of a 3.5/5, but I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads. I have mixed feelings. I loved the chemistry and the cowboy vibes, but I really didn’t like Denver’s behaviour, and this book didn’t get me into the Christmas spirit like I hoped.
