Mean Girls (2024)
Mean girls are back. Cady Heron is from Africa and has been homeschooled her whole life. But now she moves back to America and she gets to a public school for the very first time. Very fast, she becomes friends with Janis and Damian and they really don’t like the plastics (a group of mean girls) at their school. They make a plan to make them less popular. But the more time Cady spends with those girls, the more she becomes more like them. And all this time, Cady has to pretend she doesn’t like math because that is so not cool. And to make it more complicated, Cady develops a crush on Aaron, Regina’s ex-boyfriend.
Review
Everyone knows the original with Lindsay Lohan from the early 2000s. And right now, we are in this weird era where they make a lot of remakes of every single movie. It is like they have no original ideas anymore. Most of the time the original obviously beats the remake. They made a second Mean Girls movie and that was just the biggest flop ever. I’ve seen that movie and I just don’t want to think about it. It was the worst, especially the acting was terrible. And now they decided to make a remake of the first movie, although it is more a remake of the musical Mean Girls. I had absolutely no idea there was a Mean Girls musical, so I can’t compare it to the musical, but I am going to compare it to the original movie.
The difference between the original and this one is that they sing just like in the musical. It is a musical movie. I have mixed experiences with musical movies. Sometimes I love it, other times I just hate it. But you know what? The original is still way better, but this wasn’t as bad as I had expected. I sort of enjoyed it actually. Some songs are better than others, but I still enjoyed it.
I am happy they didn’t use the same script as the original. I think I’ve seen one remake and they used the exact same script, which was weird. They made a lot of adjustments, because back then we didn’t really have social media or phones with us in high school. But now we do, so they changed that.
The casting was great though. First of all, there are some familiar faces in this movie and I really liked that. Auli’i Cravalho, who plays the role of Janis was incredible. I thought Avantika who plays Karen super funny and Renée Rapp who plays Regina was a badass girl/woman. I also loved that Jenna Fischer (from The Office) played Cady’s mother and honestly, that was the best casting they did. They really could be mother and daughter. That was very believable. And of course, I screamed when I saw Lindsay Lohan in this movie. She has a small role, but that was so cool.
Overall, I still think the original was better, but this was a lot better than I had expected. I might watch this again in the future. If you liked the original, I would definitely recommend watching this one as well. It isn’t worse than Mean Girls 2. But watch this with an open mind and just enjoy it.
