Review
Would you believe me if I say that this was actually the first time that I saw Wicked? I have never seen the musical, read the book or whatsoever. I don’t think I even really knew what this story was about. But I finally watched the movie.
I know many of you have seen the musical and probably will compare this movie with the musical but I haven’t seen the musical, so I can’t compare. And I thought the movie was great. I have to admit that I was a little bit afraid that three hours would be too long for me. I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie of three hours. I have to blame myself for spending too much time scrolling and ruining my attention span. But honestly, the movie did not feel that long. It was over before I even knew it. I think that is a good sign. If the movie was bad, three hours is very long.
This was also the first time hearing the songs of Wicked. I heard ‘popular’ before but I had no idea it was a song from this movie. Musical movies for me are a hit or a big miss. I feel like there is no in between. Some of the songs were great. I loved ‘What’s this feeling’ song a lot. And I thought their voices blended so perfectly. The choreography at some points was amazing. They were all so insync.
The story is pretty interesting as well. I loved that the popular woman Galinda became friends with the least popular woman Elphaba. It shows that you should never judge someone based on their looks. Although, I couldn’t help thinking that there might be even more than just a friendship?
I think they did a great job on the casting. Everyone was so good and wonderful. Elphaba’s voice is so beautiful and it fits so perfectly with Ariana’s voice. Also, I had no idea that Mr Bridgerton could sing like that. Jonathan Bailey (Fiyero) surprised me the most in this movie.
Of course, the movie ends with a cliffhanger, because this movie is only part 1. Part two will come out at the end of 2025, but I am so excited. In the mean time I probably want to read the book. I’ve heard the book is very different than the musical/movie. So I think I have to read that one with an open mind.
