I’m glad my mom died

Jennette started acting when she was only six years old, but most people probably know her as Sam from the Nickelodeon show Icarly. It was not Jennette’s dream to become an actress, it was her mother’s dream. Her mother wasn’t allowed to do those things when she was younger and she wanted to give Jennette that opportunity. Jennette did everything to make her mother happy, so she agreed to act and eventually, she also went along with calorie restriction because her mother said it would be a great idea. In this biography written by Jennette McCurdy she talks about her childhood, acting career, relationships, eating disorders and of course her relationship with her mother.

Review

I rarely read any non-fiction books. I am the kind of woman who really likes to read romance because it makes me feel happy. But almost two years ago, I found out that Jennette McCurdy wrote a book about her life. I also know her from Icarly. I knew I really wanted to read this book because first of all, this book has an interesting title. I mean, most people wouldn’t use this title for their biography. I also read great reviews about this book, so two years later it is time to read it myself.

And wow! I don’t know where to begin. Jennette never wanted to be an actress, it was her mother’s dream for her. She was only six years old when she started acting. I have to admit I only know her from Icarly and maybe from the Netflix show ‘Between’. But it is interesting to read about how she experienced everything. Because all we saw was the happy and energetic Sam on Icarly. Her life was the opposite of that. I think this was eye-opening because this shows that you never know how someone is doing or feeling.

I thought that this book was well-written and I know that Jennette talked about she likes writing and I think she definitely has the talent for it. After reading this book I have a lot of respect for her. She has been through so many things since she was really young and I can’t imagine how terrible that must have been. I don’t want to spoil too many things for those who still want to read this book, but her relationship wasn’t great at all. I am surprised that nobody stood up for her, maybe her grandparents or her older brothers. On the other hand, when you’re in a situation like that you don’t always realize that it is a bad and unhealthy situation until you’re older and when you take a step back.

Some things were pretty shocking and I am sure she’s isn’t the only one who went through this. I am sure more people went (and are going) through the same or similar thing. And that is messed up. I hope this book will spread awareness. Just don’t push your kid into the show business if they don’t want to. It is that simple.

As I mentioned, this book was eye-opening and very well-written. I know I don’t read a lot of non-fiction or biographies but this is one of the best I’ve ever read. And I completely understand why she named her book ‘I’m glad my mom died’. It sounds harsh, but for Jennette, it was probably the best (and maybe the worst) thing that happened to her, so she could start living for herself.
